The New England Aquarium's Rescue & Rehabilitation team responds to and provides medical care to stranded sea turtles. The primary responsibilities for this position will include; performing husbandry duties in the sea turtle hospital, training volunteer teams, providing care and treatments to cold-stunned sea turtles, responding to hotline calls when appropriate, managing the stranding database, and other administrative tasks.
This position works out of the New England Aquarium's Animal Care Center at the Quincy Shipyard in Quincy MA. Employees are required to find their own transportation to the facility. Free parking is available.
This is a 3-month, temporary position with the potential for an extension up to 3 additional months based on the volume of turtles in the Rescue and Rehabilitation Center. The position will begin in late October and the regular schedule will be 40 hours per week. Typical hours will be 9a - 5:30p, but flexibility to work varied hours and days of the week is strongly preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provide husbandry and care for animals collected through the Rescue Program.
- Assist with health assessments and medical procedures on animals, including restraint.
- Assist with reporting requirements and other administrative responsibilities as necessary.
- Maintain records and databases.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Training and Experience
- Animal handling experience required, experience with cold-stunned sea turtles preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Ability to work in 55F temperature for long periods of time, stand for long periods of time, lift up to 50lbs from the floor, bend, stoop, kneel and reach comfortably.
