About the Role

The Technical and Exhibits Manager is a cross-departmental position responsible for the daily technical operations throughout Whitaker Center including planning, installation, and maintenance, with a primary focus on Sunoco Performance Theater. In the UPMC Science Center, this position plays a critical role in planning and managing the upkeep and maintenance of exhibits. This hands-on position encompasses a wide range of tasks, including sound design, basic lighting design and knowledge, electrical, carpentry, painting, and general repair work. Additionally, the Technical and Exhibits Manager manages traveling exhibits installation and maintenance, ensuring that all displays are well-maintained and engaging. An ideal candidate communicates clearly and efficiently, manages multiple productions and events in different phases of completion, and can successfully lead employees to complete their tasks efficiently and safely. A critical aspect of this position is the ability to develop innovative solutions that leverage available resources and emerging technologies to enhance the impact of events and exhibits and the overall guest experience.

Requirements

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Oversee all technical aspects of Whitaker Center productions and event rentals with a primary focus on installing, operating, and striking all technical elements. 
  2. Advise Director of Production on the technical specifications, costs, and usage of technical equipment required for the individual projects and supervise the implementation of approved technical plans.
  3. Oversee the regular maintenance, repair, and updates of Science Center exhibits, ensuring they remain functional, fresh, and engaging.
  4. Work with the Science Center Manager to develop content and facilitate exhibit repairs, make updates, and complete installation.
  5. Determine the necessary technical support in collaboration with other production team members, including lighting, sound, and all special needs necessary for productions in advance of production dates.
  6. Provide logistical support for facility rentals and visiting productions regarding safety, technical characteristics, and other areas of SPT operations.
  7. Attend meetings, rehearsals, and performances as needed, to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of mounting successful events/productions.
  8. Assist with the preparation and planning for Theater and Science Center technical budgets; maintain inventory and order specialized theater and exhibit technical supplies.
  9. Assist in recruiting, onboarding, training, and assignment of technical staff.
  10. Responsibility and efficiently manage work areas, materials, supply inventories, and equipment.
  11. Proactively monitor the condition of equipment and technical assets of the theatre including shop, storage, stage, and rigging equipment; arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
  12. Recommend to Director of Production Fixed Asset purchases of technical equipment.
  13. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience.
  • 5 years of Technical Direction experience in professional theatrical organizations.
  • Experience forming and managing relationships with visiting artists, staff, and guests.
  • Advanced knowledge of theatrical rigging and fly systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of sound, lighting and video systems.
  • Excellent time management, organization, and administrative skills.
  • Proficiency in Google, Zoom, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must be able to work independently to a high standard of reliability and quality. 
  • Must be able to be a positive, professional representative of Whitaker Center to the community.

  • Ability to stand for long periods, climb stairs frequently, and lift up to 50 lbs. 
  • Must be able to understand and obey safety rules and operating regulations related to technology, equipment, and chemicals. 
  • Must have a willingness to utilize the newest technologies available in all programs. 
  • Ability to successfully complete a Pennsylvania State Police Clearance, a Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance obtained through the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services and a Federal Bureau of Investigation Criminal History Record Information obtained by submitting a full set of fingerprints to the Pennsylvania State Police or its authorized agent for submission to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in Technical Direction or equivalent work experience.

Physical Demands

  • Able to lift at least 50 pounds
  • Able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to lifting and bending, as well as climbing ladders
  • Ability to work from heights (grids, catwalks, ladders, scaffolding, and lifts)
  • Workdays could include long periods of time either sitting or standing
