The Department of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies at Brown seeks applications for a tenure track assistant professor position in playwriting. The successful applicant will begin their work here by serving a term as the Head of Playwriting, directing and advancing Brown’s nationally renowned playwriting programs, which consist of a top-ranking, fully-funded MFA program and a robust undergraduate curriculum in writing for performance. Responsibilities will include curriculum development, teaching graduate and undergraduate playwriting courses, helping to produce the annual graduate playwriting festival as well as implementing and directing other programming throughout the year, and mentoring both graduate and undergraduate students in curricular and co-curricular activities germane to their professional, intellectual, and creative development, including mentoring graduate students who are teaching. We welcome candidates whose practice centers on playwriting and whose broader artistic work engages a diverse range of aesthetic traditions, styles, and forms of art and performance. Experience with other roles in making new work for theater, such as directing, producing, and/or design, is also desirable, as is experience teaching playwriting or related genres of writing for performance at the university level. We seek a candidate who will share the Department’s commitment to cultural and artistic diversity and to the integration of theory and practice in the context of a vibrantly interdisciplinary liberal arts curriculum. Successful candidates will show that they can further Brown’s history of intellectual rigor and artistic experimentation in playwriting.
Candidates will have an established record of artistic achievement and demonstrated excellence in university-level teaching and advising.
All candidates should submit a cover letter showing interest in the position, which should include a specific description of their approach to teaching and mentorship and a brief artist’s statement, and candidates should address how they would contribute to the research and/or teaching missions of our diverse and inclusive university community. They should also submit a CV, a playwriting sample, and the names and email addresses of three recommenders.
A candidate’s recommenders will only be asked to submit letters if the candidate advances to the second round of consideration.
For fullest consideration, candidates will submit applications by October 20, 2025, though applications will be accepted until the position is filled or the search is closed. Please address materials to Search Committee Chair Dr. Iván Ramos via Interfolio. The term of employment will begin July 1, 2026.
