Glass Technical Tempering Specialist
Position Overview
The Technical Tempering Specialist is responsible for monitoring and adjusting system parameters that make up the tempering recipes that create quality glass panes for Quaker's window and door production. The position must gather and maintain knowledge of the required system parameters and understand how to adjust multiple heating & cooling times, angles of the air in quelching and pressure variables to produce the different outputs. Technical Tempering Specialist is the lead trainer for the tempering line on all production shifts.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Understand the daily delivery goal, on-time complete is a critical number
- Read and decipher paperwork to ensure proper units are prepared for each order
- Properly identify glass by size, window orientation, sales order number, line number and Low Emissivity (Low E) - the coating applied to glass to make it more energy efficient
- Organize glass units by production date, order number and glass type
- Create new tempering recipes in the Future equipment software or system to produce the desired glass
- Adjust heating times, furnace speed, blower, quenching and cooling pressures, cooling times, distribution and other variables as needed to produce the multiple glass types and in a way that avoids breaking or bowing
- Protect and secure recipe updates in the system,
- ONLY the Technical Tempering Specialist may save a new tempering recipe
- Properly and efficiently run the Forel Water Jet Cutter
- Communicate with Cutters when running low on glass to temper
- Inspect materials for any quality defects
- Reduce and work toward eliminating wasted tempered glass due to repairs or re-work
- Continually train team members on tempering recipe adjustments and troubleshooting to improve glass quality
- Perform daily housekeeping to clean work area and tempering equipment
- Perform proper preventive maintenance to tempering equipment
- Fill in at different workstations as production needs require
- Prompt and regular attendance at an assigned work location.
- Interact and communicate with employees and customers in an appropriate manner.
- Availability on site to confer with staff members with whom the employee must interact on a regular basis.
- Communicate via email, prepare reports and work schedules.
- Review and analyze different tempering system parameters.
- Plan, prioritize and monitor tempering recipe update activities.
- Complete assigned tasks/projects in a timely manner.
Supervisory Responsibility
The position has indirect leadership and oversight responsibilities over the Future software that creates the tempering recipes and the Forel Water Jet Cutter. Responsibilities include training the Tempering Department employees on the many parameters and adjustments or tempering recipes to get each of the desired quality glass results.
Safety
Observe safety and security policies and procedures, including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment including but not limited to eye and toe protection. Steal or composite toed footwear required. Employees must report potentially unsafe conditions and use equipment and materials properly. Employees must follow job-specific safety requirements such as Safe Lift, Safe Product Handling Guidelines and safe hand placement. Finally, this position must also wear Cut Proof 5 or greater gloves and cut sleeves.
Travel
Travel between campuses will be required for training purposes.
Qualifications
An individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Proficient with Future a specialized tempering software
- Proficient knowledge & recognition of each glass type
- Proficient knowledge of Quaker's tempering recipes
- Proficient knowledge of how to run the Forel Water Jet Cutter
- Accurately use a tape measure
Preferred Education and Experience
An individual is expected to have the minimum level of education and/or related expertise listed here:
- High school diploma or a passed General Education Development test preferred
- Minimum 1 Year Experience with Glass Tempering Department

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday during normal business hours. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to climactic variations, fumes or airborne particles, various levels of vibration, and moving mechanical parts. Various different types of Personal Protective Equipment might be required based on the employee's work location. The noise level in the work environment may require hearing protection.
