In order to participate in Berklee Student Employment, a student must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Current student at Berklee College of Music or Boston Conservatory at Berklee.

  • Enrolled at least half-time in a degree, diploma, or certificate-seeking undergraduate or graduate program. Summer is the only semester in which a student can maintain employment without being enrolled. In this case, the student must be pre-registered for the upcoming fall semester. This exception does not apply to fall or spring semesters.

  • Have a valid United States Social Security Number (SSN).

  • Remain in “valid” Visa status as applicable.

  • A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA. Students in their first semester can work, even though they do not have an official GPA until the completion of their first semester.

  • Federal Work Study student may apply.

  • In good disciplinary standing.

  • Must be located in the U.S.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

This position would be great for those who love their core music classes and like helping others. Those interested in music education or teaching are preferred.

  • Aid the City Music High School Academy Theory 1 teacher on Fridays 4-6 pm

  • Tutor one-on-one in-office for high school students and college core music classes

  • Hold theory study groups in-office

  • Facilitate advising success workshops 

  • Assist in creating study guides and other resources for in-office use

  • Schedule meetings and conduct follow-up

  • Conduct assessments and create progress reports

  • Serve as a mentor 

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ear Training Pedagogy – design and implement engaging rhythmic and melodic exercises using simplification, chunking, and musical analogies.

  • Rhythm Instruction – teach rhythmic concepts through whiteboard notation, call-and-response, mnemonic devices, and metronome practice.

  • Rhythmic & Melodic Dictation – create step-by-step systems for dictation tasks, including note-count identification, rhythmic proximity, melodic contour, and self-checking strategies.

  • Interval Recognition – apply solfege, reference melodies, and targeted drills to improve pitch and interval identification.

  • Harmonic Dictation – train students to identify bass lines, determine chord qualities, and apply diatonic harmony; guide recognition of inversions and secondary dominants.

  • Music Theory & Harmony – explain both foundational and advanced topics (notation, rhythmic subdivision, whole/half steps, secondary dominants) with practical applications.

  • Adaptive Instructional Design – customize teaching methods to individual learning styles and address knowledge gaps.

  • Instructional Tools – integrate metronomes, whiteboards, and mnemonic systems into lessons to enhance learning.

  • Student Engagement – foster an enjoyable, supportive, and motivating learning environment to encourage repeat tutoring sessions.

  • Rapport-Building – use humor, empathy, and active listening to strengthen student relationships.

  • Clarity & Communication – simplify complex concepts into manageable steps to reduce overwhelm.

  • Flexibility – adjust methods when an approach isn’t working, experimenting until comprehension is achieved.

  • Encouragement & Confidence-Building – reassure students, celebrate progress, and normalize the learning curve in challenging material.
