The RMIT UP Foundation Studies Program consists of courses comparable in standard to an Australian Year 12 curriculum. It is nationally recognised as a program that equips international students with the skills and capabilities to seek entry into higher education programs in Australia. This program is designed to prepare students for a seamless transition into a range  
of higher education programs. It develops a mix of discipline knowledge, academic English  
and study skills in a supportive, flexible and learner-centred environment. It aims to assist students to become independent, critical and lifelong learners and to maximise their potential for success in an Australian university context.  

About the role 

In this position, you will be responsible for the teaching delivery of RMIT Up’s Foundation Studies Psychology course. Duties include assessment, monitoring academic progress of students, contributing to the development of the Foundation Studies curriculum and providing an outstanding student experience. 

This course is designed to introduce Foundation STEM students to Psychology as a systematic study of people’s thoughts, feelings and behaviour with an emphasis on developing analytical and problem-solving skills in a range of situations. 

Key subject themes include: 

  • Understanding the structure and function of the brain and human nervous system analysing the impact of stress on the body. 
  • Consciousness, the purpose and nature of sleep, and the effects of sleep disruption  
    on a person’s functioning. 
  • The concepts of mental health including phobia management approaches. 
  • Research, analytical and reporting methods related to the investigation of mental processes and psychological functioning

About You 

To be successful in this position you will have:  

Essential  

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills   
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in delivering and assessing Foundation Studies or equivalent courses  
  • Experience in relevant industry and substantial discipline knowledge as it relates to this position  
  • Capacity to identify learning problems in students, propose and implement effective strategies  
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute effectively as a constructive and proactive member of a team  
  • Demonstrated skills in the use of relevant information and communication technologies  
  • Current Working with Children Check (or VIT registration)  
  • A recognised degree relevant to the course being taught plus:  A formal qualification in the delivery of education OR  Minimum two years’ relevant teaching experience, including breadth of experience in delivering to students from non-English speaking backgrounds.   
  • The minimum requirements for teachers primarily responsible for academic English language subject areas are:   
  • A recognised degree AND   
  • An appropriate English language teaching qualification AND   
  • 2 years ESL/EFL teaching experience  

Desirable  

  • Experience teaching in a Foundation Studies or a year 12 equivalent program educating international students;  
  • Experience teaching in a tertiary setting.  
  • TESOL (English Language Teaching Qualification) for teacher responsible for  
    non-English subject areas.   
  • Proven collegiality and the ability to share ideas  
  • Knowledge of current pedagogical practices
