Job Purpose

The Product Manager role is responsible for effectively managing the development and commercial launch of our next-generation railroad industry product suites and services. This position is also responsible for managing our legacy product lines and any potential future shutdown of legacy products. The Product Manager is responsible for effectively managing the product lifecycle of the product line.

Key Job Elements

• Drives new commercial launch strategy for the next generation product and services; this includes updated market analysis, project time line communication strategy, customer communication, marketing, etc;
• Drives product and service suite growth strategy, including support and digital cloud services;
• Owns Product Volume, Profit/Loss;
• Develops and refines Product Pricing strategy;
• Owns Product Cost (target and cost out—works with Sourcing);
• Owns the entire Product Lifecycle;
• Works with Systems Engineering to develop Product and Service Requirements;
• Manages annual Revenue and Profit forecast/budget planning;
• Drives 5-year Long-Term Revenue and Margin budget/forecast;
• Drives long-term Product Vision / Multi-Generation Product Plan (MGPP);
• Develops customer value proposition;
• Owns and manages product specifications;
• Drive technology investment plan & payback analysis;
• Continuously researches and updates market Total Addressable Market (TAM)/Serviceable Available
Market (SAM);
• Allocates and manages budgets for all product line initiatives;
• Manages cross functional and external relationships, including industry relationships, working closely with the Director of Signaling Sales, General Manager, Sales, Engineering, etc.;
• Interfaces with senior management, customers, and key internal and external stakeholders on a regular basis;
• Lead projects within and across groups to bring new products to market;
• Lead all new product development planning and projects for the technology product line;
• Perform all responsibilities in accordance with "Our Values in Action, Caterpillar's Code of Conduct".

Qualifications and Experience

• Strong presentation and interpersonal skills;
• Strong verbal and written communication skills;
• Strong planning, budgeting, financial analysis and management skills;
• Marketing and Strategic planning skills;
• Demonstrated experience in leading or being part of a team environment with multiple examples of executing product development projects;
• Demonstrated experience in Product Management role(s) of industrial (preferred) and/or consumer technology products & services;
• Strong analytical capability & creative problem solving where problems are broad and complex;
• Solid understanding of value proposition development, Voice of Customer, trade-off analysis;
• Self-motivated with willingness to work beyond scripted job description.

Preferred Skills
• Broad knowledge of Railroad Industry and specifically locomotive, Signaling and Wayside Asset Protection Technology, including control system technology;
• Solid understanding of engineering and manufacturing quality processes;
• Understanding of the latest general technology innovations;
• Understanding of Railroad operational practices and policies;
• General marketing and strategic planning skills;
• Dasic financial statement knowledge;
• Financial analysis skills.

Essential and Physical Activities Functions
• Strength and Position — Position typically involves office managerial work. Frequent sitting, occasional standing, walking; occasional walking on uneven outdoor and indoor surfaces, climbing aboard locomotives. Rare light-level lifting (up to 30 pounds);
• Motion — Position regularly requires standard motions associated with an office environment as well as standard motions associated with walking into manufacturing area to inspect products and speak with associates, leading and demonstrating in an industrial environment;
• Vision/Hearing Requirements — Constant verbal communications, including both talking and hearing;
• Work Environment — Position will require the occasional use of Personal Protective Equipment. At times work in a non-temperature-controlled environment. Position is located in an industrial environment, including occasional exposure to noise (85+ decibels), exposure to extreme temperatures, exposure to hazardous materials, heavy equipment, and other hazardous working conditions;
• Emotional Demands —Very high level of responsibility. Responsible for location oversight of mission critical operations. Requires significant interpersonal skills while sustaining very high standards;
• Safety — Position will occasionally require the occasional use of Personal Protective Equipment.
