About the Department
Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking an experienced customer service person to work as a Scale Attendant at our two state-of-the art transfer stations. The selected candidate will work full-time during the week (including weekends) where they will greet and educate customers, operate an automated weighing system, and collect appropriate fees.

The successful candidate may be required to report to either of the city's transfer stations: the North Transfer Station (1350 North 34th Street) and the South Transfer Station (130 South Kenyon St).

Position Duties
- Operate an automated weighing system to weigh loaded and empty vehicles. Collect the appropriate fee according to load weight; and visually inspect loads to identify recyclable, hazardous and other materials.
- Communicate clearly in person and over the radio with Transfer Station staff regarding contents of incoming loads, etc.
- Divert hazardous and other unacceptable materials by providing information to the customers on alternate methods of disposal.
- Answer questions from customers regarding rates, recycling, and other information. Explain and provide customers with written rules, regulations, and procedures regarding dumping of solid waste and recyclable materials.
- Balance money collected with amount charged; count cash and checks and prepare deposits.
- Maintain and submit records of tonnage received, number of vehicles using the station and any accidents or unusual happenings occurring at the site. Use computer to update credit customer accounts.

Minimum Qualifications
- One year of responsible work experience involving public contact and/or cashiering responsibilities (or a combination of education, training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
License, Certification, and Other Requirements:
- Current, valid Driver's License or evidence of equivalent mobility.
- A Math and Written Test will be administered for those selected as part of this hiring process, and those who pass will be interviewed.
Desired Qualifications
- Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong math skills.
- History of providing exceptional customer service with a diverse population.
- Cash handling experience in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of computer applications.
- Ability and willingness to learn new computer programs.
- Bilingual skills a plus.

- The full salary range for this position is $29.73 - $33.42 per hour.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:
- Required to work out-of-doors in all types of weather.
- Required to work irregular hours, weekends, and holidays.
- Frequently exposed to exhaust fumes and loud noise.
- Required to stand for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to move throughout the transfer station to perform duties, office machinery, 10-key, filing, etc.
- Occasionally required to deal with angry or abusive customers, either in person or over the telephone.
- Shift includes a working lunch.
