CLASS TITLE:  VEHICLE MECHANIC I

 

CLASS CODE:  7916

 

REPORT TO/EVALUATED BY: Director of Transportation or Designee 

 

BASIC FUNCTION: Maintain physical school vehicles/buses in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of them may be made safely at all times.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Maintain the ability to diagnose, repair, rebuild and make all necessary adjustments on all vehicle systems.
  • Perform monthly inspection on all vehicles.
  • Perform troubleshooting and repairs on district vehicles.
  • Inventory Management and Control; sets up and supervises receipt and issuance of parts and supplies.
  • Analyze requirements and makes recommendations on schedule for preventative maintenance program for

District vehicles and equipment.

  • Prepare and audit the preventive maintenance program for transportation and maintenance vehicles and

maintains related records and reports on vehicle maintenance operations.

  • Accomplish engine testing using specialized equipment.
  • Perform road testing to determine roadability.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge and ability to repair components on all systems, including the ability to operate

shop equipment.

  • Recommend replacement of equipment and materials for the department.
  • Provide on-the-job training for mechanic trades personnel and bus drivers when requested.
  • Utilize the Automated Fleet Management System.
  • Strict adherence to the Policies and Procedures of the Danville Board of Education, the Employee Handbook

and Kentucky Revised Statutes.

  • Fulfilling contractual obligation of days worked.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

  • High school diploma, G.E.D. Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law.
  • Must be a state approved inspector. 
  • Valid Kentucky Commercial Class B driver's license, including passenger endorsement; School Bus Certificate.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. Occasionally the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 75 pounds. The employee is directly responsible for safety, well-being, or work output of other people. The job requires exposure in an outside environment with extreme weather and temperature changes as well as occasional walks on slippery surfaces. Continual use of hand strength to grasp tools. Requires activities involving working around and moving mechanical equipment and buses. Frequently working with toxic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, gasses, fumes and sprays. 

 

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position required the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
