Position Overview

Commonfund is seeking an experienced Director, Business Systems to lead our technology initiatives and drive operational excellence across complex, interrelated business systems that can be internal as well as external to Commonfund. This role requires a strategic leader who combines technical expertise with exceptional communication skills to bridge the gap between technical teams and business stakeholders. The ideal candidate will act as an interface between the development team, internal business groups and external vendors.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Problem Resolution

  • Systematically identify, diagnose, and resolve issues across interconnected business systems
  • Lead cross-functional teams to ensure timely resolution of critical business system challenges
  • Make strategic decisions about when to communicate, escalate, and involve key stakeholders
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance system reliability and performance

Communication & Stakeholder Management

  • Translate complex technical concepts into clear, accessible language for non-technical audiences
  • Facilitate technical discussions to achieve understanding and consensus among diverse stakeholders
  • Adapt communication style to match the technical proficiency of various audiences
  • Lead user workshops to define change requests and explore automation opportunities
  • Present findings and recommendations to senior leadership using compelling visual and written materials

Project Management

  • Function as a "general contractor" by assembling and coordinating specialized teams to achieve business objectives
  • Break down complex projects into manageable tasks with clear deliverables and timelines
  • Coordinate vendor relationships and manage external partnerships for system implementations
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with business requirements

Technical Operations

  • Understand new databases, use SQL Management Studio for SQL operations, perform data extraction and update using SQL Query language and Excel Macro, connect to SQL server from Excel and build pivot tables in Excel.
  • Configure and maintain FTP accounts, Supervise daily file transfers with Vendors using SFTP and BizTalk Server
  • Troubleshoot file transfer processes and coordinate solutions with both technical and non-technical teams
  • Perform data operations - extract, combine, analyze, and present data to business groups.

Required Qualifications

Technical Expertise

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related technical field
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in business systems and technology leadership
  • Exposure to programming environments with some understanding of full development lifecycle
  • Basic understanding of databases and database management.
  • Proficiency in SQL Server query writing and optimization
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel (including VBA) and PowerPoint
  • Experience with FTP configuration and file transfer troubleshooting
  • Knowledge of BizTalk Server configuration and administration is a big plus. Must be willing to learn if no prior experience with BizTalk Server
  • Strong data analysis and visualization skills

Project Management

  • Experience managing complex, multi-phase technology projects
  • Ability to coordinate vendor relationships and external partnerships
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Experience with change management and process improvement initiatives

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in relevant field
  • PMP or similar project management certification
  • Experience in financial services or similar regulated industry
  • Knowledge of business process automation tools and methodologies
  • Experience with data governance and compliance requirements
  • Experience and knowledge of Salesforce will be a big plus.
  • Some experience with Biztalk Server is desirable but not required.
