The career opportunity:
The English Language Instructor teaches classes to adult immigrants and refugees to support them with developing English language skills while preparing for employment. Classes for intermediate and advanced level English language learners include topics such as job search, resume writing, and job interviews. Classes for beginning level students focus on basic literacy and communication skills such as learning to read and write simple words and sentences and engage in conversations that are common in everyday life.
Instructors must be enthusiastic about teaching online and in person (core classes are currently offered on Zoom with supplemental classes offered in person). The instructor is expected to travel to different Hopelink locations in north and east King County and to libraries in south King County to meet in person with students, team members, and volunteers as needed.
This position will conduct classes and offer one-on-one support to adult learners who are looking for work, preparing for education and job training programs, seeking to connect to community resources, and seeking financial stability. A strengths-based, trauma-informed approach and commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and anti-racism are essential for success in this role.
This position also performs duties not directly related to teaching to support the overall program, such as delivering program orientations, conducting CASAS testing, assisting students with completing program intake forms, supporting and advising students one-on-one, entering attendance and student information in a database, coordinating volunteers who support students, and conducting outreach in the community.

- Experience and enthusiasm for teaching online
- TESOL Certification or experience in a closely related field with coursework in language teaching methodology and language acquisition theories
- 2+ years’ experience teaching adults; experience working with immigrants and refugees
- Committed to racial equity and to applying principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of work
- Committed to using a trauma-informed approach in providing service to students and collaborating with colleagues
- Excellent intercultural communication skills and commitment to practicing cultural humility
- Excellent English communication skills both written and oral
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace; comfort with using Chromebooks, learning new technology, troubleshooting tech issues, and using technology tools to enhance instruction
- Ability to accurately enter and manage client data in a database
- Able to work two evenings per week
- Ability to travel between Hopelink sites in a personal vehicle. Mileage reimbursement provided.
Examples of what you will be doing:
- Teaches English language classes for adult immigrants and refugees.
- Utilizes provided curriculum and develops curriculum for synchronous and asynchronous modes with adaptations for a variety of levels and learning needs.
- Collaborates with team members to continuously improve programs.
- Aligns instruction to the English Language Proficiency Standards and College and Career Readiness Standards.
- Provides timely feedback on students’ assignments in the Canvas Learning Management System.
- Delivers new student orientations and completes intake paperwork with students.
- Conducts CASAS pre-testing and post-testing remotely and in person.
- Loans materials such as Chromebooks to students and ensures that students know how to use the materials and tech equipment.
- Uses interpretation and translation services as needed to effectively communicate with students.
- Facilitates workshops and events for students to supplement their learning and support progress toward reaching their goals.
How you will be compensated: Hopelink is proud to provide meaningful paid time away from work and an affordable, comprehensive benefits package.
- Compensation: $25.00-$26.00 per hour/DOE
- Up to 10 paid vacation and sick days annually and 10 paid holidays,
- Plus up to 7 paid float days available to use immediately; dependent on hire date and hours/week
