About the Department

The City of Eustis is seeking a trustworthy, responsible individual who, under general supervision, performs skilled work involving the maintenance and repair of gasoline or diesel driven motors and related auto equipment.  Routine work is performed with independence and more difficult work is performed under direct guidance and supervision.

Examples of Machines, Tools and Equipment Used:  Various hand tools related to mechanical work; various power tools used in mechanical work such as grinders, sanders, drills, lathes, welding equipment, etc.; electronic and mechanical diagnostic equipment; various automotive parts and equipment; may test drive and operate light and heavy automotive equipment.
 
Supervision Received:  Maintenance Garage Supervisor, Public Works Superintendent

Position Duties

  • Performs overhaul and repair work on automobiles, light and heavy trucks, mowers, and other automotive, diesel and mechanical equipment; 
  • Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary parts; 
  • Tunes and adjusts engines; 
  • Repairs and welds automotive bodies; 
  • Services and repairs brake systems; 
  • Tests and repairs electrical equipment, generators, distributors, magnetos and starters; 
  • Removes, repairs and replaces component parts or assembles automotive systems; 
  • Repairs and replaces valves, pistons, main bearings, cooling, fuel and exhaust systems, transmissions, front and rear axles and hydraulic controls; 
  • Maintains routine records and reports; 
  • Cleans and maintains shop in neat and orderly fashion; 
  • Assists in the preparation for and aftermath of a major emergency such as a hurricane or other storm or disaster; 
  • Works on-call, as needed, during emergency situations such as hurricanes, severe weather, etc.; 
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment of automotive mechanical trade; knowledge of the principles of internal combustion engines; knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
 
Ability to diagnose, locate and repair defects in automotive equipment; ability to carry out assignments with minimum instructions; ability to read and write English; ability to keep records of repair and service operations; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other divisions; ability to drive and operate light and heavy automotive equipment; ability to work on-call, if required, including nights, weekends and holidays; ability to remain at a city work shelter, before, during and after a hurricane or other storm or disaster.
 
Mechanical skill in automotive and diesel repair.

Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or recognized equivalent, with additional coursework or training in automotive mechanics; supplemented by two (2) years experience in automotive repair and maintenance; Forklift Certification; Flagger Certification.  Valid Florida Driver's License with an acceptable driving record is required.  ASE and Air Conditioning Certification/License preferred.  Other related experience may be considered.  *Employee required to furnish mechanic hand tools to be used on the job.

Working Hours:
Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Other Qualifications

Physical Demands:
This is moderately heavy work most of the working time.  Requires frequent walking and standing for long periods of time; frequent stooping, reaching, bending, lifting 50+ pounds, carrying/ pushing/ pulling 50+ pounds; good finger/hand dexterity; good hand/eye coordination; good eyesight; hearing and speech or vocal communication (for safety); working in adverse environmental conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.) for moderate periods of time; regular driving and operation of assigned equipment.

Salary Information:
$18.1431 to $25.7885 per hour; EXCELLENT benefits (Note: See Benefits Tab for more information).  Applicants should expect a starting salary of $18.1431 per hour.  Only applicants with the most job-related qualifications will be selected for interview and further consideration.  Additional consideration may be given to applicants with more extensive education, training, or experience.  Following a thorough background investigation including a criminal history and driver’s license check, the candidate will be given a conditional offer of employment.  The final candidate will be required to pass a drug test and medical exam.
