OUR POSITION

The Maintenance Worker I/II is a journey-level position within the Public Works Department, responsible for performing a full range of maintenance and repair duties across specialized crews such as street maintenance, concrete repair, and graffiti removal. Working under general supervision, the incumbent operates a wide array of tools and mechanical equipment, completes assigned tasks with minimal oversight, and may provide functional guidance to lower-level staff. This role plays a key part in maintaining the City’s infrastructure, including streets, sidewalks, and storm drains. Through hands-on work such as asphalt patching, concrete finishing, and graffiti abatement. While not responsible for supervising crews, the Maintenance Worker I/II is expected to demonstrate sound judgment, initiative, and a strong commitment to public service and safety

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate for the Maintenance Worker I/II position is a reliable and skilled individual with either one year (for level I) or two years (for level II) of experience in public works-related construction or maintenance. They should possess a valid California driver's license, with the ability to obtain a Class B driver's license with necessary endorsements. The candidate must demonstrate proficiency in semi-skilled and skilled tasks, including street and sidewalk maintenance, graffiti removal, and operating various maintenance and construction equipment. Strong problem-solving skills, the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, effective communication, and physical stamina for outdoor work in varying weather conditions are essential.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Maintenance Worker II is the full journey-level class within the public works Maintenance Worker class series. Under general supervision, an incumbent performs the full range of assigned duties in the street maintenance, concrete repair, and graffiti removal crews, including the ability to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative, and the ability to operate the full range of tools and mechanical equipment related to a specific assignment. Incumbents may exercise functional and technical supervision over lower-level maintenance staff.

Maintenance Worker II is further distinguished from Lead Maintenance Worker in that incumbents in the latter class are given assignments requiring higher levels of skill/experience, and they provide lead work direction, training, and assistance to Maintenance Workers. Appointments to the II level require that the employee be performing the full range of duties assigned to the class.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 
MWI: A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D equivalent; and one year of skilled part-time experience in public works-related construction or maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

MWI: A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy. A Class B driver's license with Air Brakes, Passenger, and Tanker Endorsements is required before the conclusion of the probationary period. 

MWII: A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D equivalent; and two years of skilled experience in public works-related construction or maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

MWII: A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy.  A Class B driver's license is required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Maintenance Worker I is the entry-level and training class in the Maintenance Worker series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of streets, curbs, gutters, storm drains, and sidewalks, and perform graffiti removal duties. Incumbents in this class are expected to promote to the Maintenance Worker II level upon meeting the minimum qualifications and performance standards of the II level classification.

Maintenance Worker II is the full journey-level class within the public works Maintenance Worker class series. Under general supervision, an incumbent performs the full range of assigned duties in the street maintenance, concrete repair, and graffiti removal crews, including the ability to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative, and the ability to operate the full range of tools and mechanical equipment related to a specific assignment. Incumbents may exercise functional and technical supervision over lower-level maintenance staff.

Maintenance Worker II is further distinguished from Lead Maintenance Worker in that incumbents in the latter class are given assignments requiring higher levels of skill/experience, and they. THE MAINTENANCE & OPERATIONS DIVISION
