We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Independent Travel Trainer to join our School Services team here in Torbay. This vital role will play a key part in championing the educational outcomes, emotional well-being, and overall achievements of our most vulnerable children.
About the Role:
The aim is to support children and young people with their journeys to and from school. We want to help them develop the skills to do this and be safe, successful and independent. We use a total communication approach to support successful interaction. This provides a range of communication aids throughout training which are suited to the needs of the trainee. Before training commences, the post holder will liaise with parents/carers, social workers and tutors to ensure a person-centred approach.
The Independent Travel Training scheme will teach:
- Road safety awareness.
- Accurately telling the time.
- Handling money.
- How to use a bus/train pass.
- Appropriate social behaviour.
- Stranger danger.
- Location identification.
- Strategies for solving problems and overcoming barriers.
- Any other issues that might arise.
- Developing skills to travel from home to school independently and without fear.
- Learning core travel skills on a familiar route to support independence for their future. This may be for things such as travelling to work, or to social and leisure activities.
- Reducing dependency on friends and family giving independence.
- Receiving preparatory one-to-one or group training.
- Being safer and more confident in the community by becoming more independent.

Skills
- Organised, reliable, flexible, and calm.
- Map reading and journey planning skills.
- Able to travel on coaches, and public transport, (including buses & trains).
- Training and facilitation skills including utilising a range of tools and methods.
- ICT and administration skills.
Knowledge
- Knowledge of Independent Travel Training including Road Safety.
- Knowledge of how Children’s Services operates, inclusive of legislation and national guidance and procedures specific to this post.
- In-depth knowledge of different learning styles and teaching methods.
- Understanding of the principles of safeguarding children and adults.
Experience & Qualifications
- Experience of working with children and young adults in a formal setting. This will include the need to deal with and communicate with service users who have learning difficulties and complex special needs.
- Working with a large group and individually.
- Facilitating learning and delivering training.
- Designing training and learning events.
