POSITION SUMMARY:


Under the direction of the District VP of Operations, the Aquatics Director is responsible for the management and operation of  Princeton YMCA’ s aquatics programs; pool and lifeguard schedules, Red Cross certifications, YMCA swim lessons, competitive swim teams, water aerobics, etc. S/he assists in the development and oversight of the budget.  S/he recruits, trains, and develops aquatics staff. S/he oversees program operations at the Princeton YMCA and any offsite programming related to aquatics. S/he ensures proper care and use of assets, that the pool is maintained, records are accurate, quality checks are conducted regularly, and all class schedules are comprehensive enough to serve the majority of the membership. S/he successfully promotes and markets programs, special initiatives and events. S/he follows and enforces safety standards and other policies and procedures.  S/he participates as member of the Leadership Team and the YMCA Annual Campaign.

 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for the development and implementation of all aquatic programs including but not limited to swim lessons (parent/child, preschool, youth, adult, private and summer camp), and lifeguard training.
  • Develop and manage the Aquatics Department budget
  • Supervise Deck Supervisors, Swim/Aquacise Instructors and Lifeguards 
  • Recruitment, selection, training, development and evaluation of Aquatics program staff. 
  • Coordinate and schedule private swim lessons, group swim lessons, water exercise classes, open lane swim and pool rentals.
  • Responsible for training all Aquatics staff on emergency response and opening and closing procedures, Blood Borne Pathogen/HAZMAT, and Child Abuse Prevention Training. 
  • Teach swim lessons, water exercise, swim instructor and LGI trainings and other aquatic classes as needed.  
  • Scheduling and coverage of all assigned lifeguard and/or swim instructor shifts.
  • Responsible for planning and conducting monthly in-service trainings for Aquatics staff who hold Lifeguard certification.
  • Responsible for running YMCA and American Red Cross certification or re-certification classes for current staff and membership population.
  • Responsible for maintaining certification records.
  • Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.


OTHER DUTIES:

  • Maintains a pool schedule that balances the needs of all aquatic groups, planning and conducting regular drills. 
  • Responsible for maintaining a clean pool environment to include properly testing of pool chemicals for proper balance and filtration systems, cleaning all decks, equipment, stainless steel, and slides with the assistance of Lifeguards. 
  • Schedule and assist with yearly shutdown cleaning scheduling and conduction.
  • Meets all annual campaign goals and organizing volunteers to lead in the annual community support campaign.
  • Responsible for promoting Aquatics programs, including developing program information for the website, programming guide, social media, etc.
  • Assist with collaborating and building relationships within the Branch, Association and community organizations, to meet the needs of members, program participants and the community at large. 
  • Maintain rescue and first aid equipment.
  • Responsible for complying with all Greater Somerset County YMCA Policies and Procedures
  • Adheres and incorporates the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility and educates members about the YMCA mission and goals.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Aquatic Director.
  • Actively participate in trainings, seminars, special events, and meetings as required.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience managing an aquatics facility including staff supervision.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in physical education, recreation, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in and ability to direct aquatics programming through supervision of staff and volunteers, development and monitoring of budgets, marketing and public relations, program development and fund-raising experience. 
  • Strong organizational, leadership, administrative, and computer skills including solid working knowledge of Microsoft Word/Excel.
  • Proven communication skills, both written and verbal, and strong human relations skills.
  • Strong knowledge of budgeting and expense control.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as required. 
  • Current Lifeguard Certification, Lifeguard Instructor certification a plus.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification or Y POOL certification.
  • Knowledge of NJ Bathing Code.
  • YMCA Team Leader certification preferred.
