Karen Clark & Company seeks a highly motivated principal structural engineer with experience in the fields of ground motion and seismic modeling to join our growing Model Development Team in our Downtown Boston office. In this position, you will work closely with other scientists and engineers to develop our suite of advanced catastrophe models with an emphasis on earthquake models.

Responsibilities

  • Development of earthquake models, seismic modeling (location, magnitude, rates), and group motion modeling
  • Sequential and Parallel Programming
  • Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis
  • Numerical simulation of nonlinear seismic soil structure interaction
  • Finite element analysis of structures
  • Collaborate with scientists and engineers to develop the technical aspects of earthquake models worldwide, including:
    • seismic source modeling (location, magnitude and rates)
    • earthquake ground motion modeling
    • analyzing impacts to ground motion due to soil characteristics
    • quantifying the probability of liquefaction susceptibility modeling
  • Verification and validation of numerical models
  • Development of fire following earthquake models
  • Modeling impacts of ground motions to buildings and contents
  • Development of vulnerability functions for different classes of buildings
  • Perform extended literature survey
  • Documenting technical publications utilized in model development
  • Mapping output and assisting in integration of EQ models and testing into KCC proprietary software
  • Developing and reviewing mathematical vulnerability functions for buildings exposed to natural catastrophes including earthquakes, hurricanes, and wildfires

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in structural or geotechnical engineering required
  • Educational or work background must have included understanding of ground motion and ability to implement ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs); knowledge of building response and damage to earthquakes; statistics and probability.
  • Experience coding in in C#; GIS, Python and R. is required
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including an eye for professional presentation
  • Ability to travel within the US with little advance notice
