General Description
Performs skilled work in mechanical refrigeration in the installation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration equipment, air conditioning systems and centrifugal chillers.
Works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Ability to secure and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification card (TWIC) within 60 days of employment and for the duration of employment.
Ability to secure and maintain a valid Port Security Identification Badge for the duration of employment.
Possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver's License based on area of assignment.
Position Duties
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in the Refrigeration Mechanic position within the Port Everglades Seaport Facilities Maintenance Division. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.
Performs the preventive maintenance, overhaul, repair, and servicing of HVAC refrigeration units and chillers and controls by checking the repair, replacement, and adjustment of worn or broken parts on condensers, compressors, water and vacuum pumps and filters, and the testing of refrigeration equipment for refrigerant leaks.
Performs removing and replacing motors, pumps, shafts, and bearings.
Works from manufacturer specifications, inspecting and testing electrical and signal circuits.
Uses maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs energy management systems. Must have excellent troubleshooting skills; may perform repairs or modifications lo compressors, motors, condensers, fans, thermostats, ducts, pipes, and other mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment and/or systems.
Checks gauges and makes inspections for preventive maintenance; reads gauges and instruments, determines temperature, velocity, and humidity factors using air and water temperature gauges; adjusts mechanisms such as valves, controls, and pumps to control fluid, pressure, and temperature levels; bleeds contaminants from system and charges with specified amount and type of refrigerant; checks gauges and makes periodic preventative maintenance inspections.
Maintains up-to-date records on job orders; maintains effective and efficient working conditions; tests refrigeration equipment for refrigerant leaks: removes and installs motors, thermostats, and humidistats; adjusts expansion valves; adjusts or changes belts; replaces gaskets, hinges, and other related hardware.
Repairs or adjusts valves, piping connections, fittings, and couplings; performs the rebu11ding, repair, and painting of wood and metal cooling towers and fans.
All work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures of the NEC, NFPA, Florida Mechanical Code, and the Engineering/Maintenance Department specifications.
Ability to read Amp meters, ohmmeters, test lamps, voltmeters, wattmeter, thermometers and manometers, refrigerant gauges, vacuum pumps, refrigerant scales, and refrigerant recycle/recovery equipment.
Sets up and operates lathe, drill press, grinder, and other metal-working tools to make and repair parts.
Operates forklifts, scissor lifts, boom lifts, power washers, blowers, vacuums, and other large and small equipment in a safe and effective manner.
Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments or may install special functional and structural parts.
Sets out temporary traffic control devices at the work site to provide a safe work environment and facilitate safe and efficient traffic flow.
Prepares a variety of log sheets (paper and digital) to document work activities, track equipment usage, and provide summary information to management.
Must work wherever the equipment/systems are located: on rooftops, outdoors, inside office buildings or mechanical rooms, etc.
Uses handheld devices, computers. radios, cell phones, and other electronic equipment to track work, communicate with others, and complete work assignments.
Must follow all applicable County and Port safety policies and guidelines.
Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
Involves routine and frequent exposure to radiation; disease/pathogens.
