About the Department

 


A typical day for an Automotive Technician II is gathering the day's schedule from the Fleet Service Writer and performing services, repairs, re-builds, or troubleshooting all types of medium to large-scale equipment/vehicles.

This job is ideal for a technician who likes to broaden their expertise with many different types and styles of equipment/vehicles. The City of Casper fleet consists of fire apparatus, police vehicles, sanitation equipment, and ski resort equipment, just to name a few.
 
 The ideal candidate will have outstanding customer service and knowledge pertaining to engines, drive trains, heating and air conditioning systems, wheelchair lifts, and servicing.

 

The hours of operation are from 8am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday. 


  • $1,000.00 yearly tool reimbursement allowance.

  • 225.00 yearly boot allowance.

Incumbents are responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining vehicles and equipment in the Municipal Fleet.

REPORTING STRUCTURE:
 
Receives general supervision from higher-level supervisory and management staff.

Position Duties

1.            Performs skilled mechanical repairs and overhaul work on various types of equipment (gasoline and diesel) such as trucks, transit buses, front-end loaders, graders, paving equipment, street sweepers, electrical and hydraulic equipment, snow plows, fire trucks and other types of municipal fleet.

                

2.            Inspects, diagnoses, and locates mechanical difficulties on vehicles and a variety of diesel and gasoline-powered maintenance and construction equipment.

                

3.            Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and/or equipment as needed.

                

4.            Diagnoses and repairs computerized control systems, ignition systems, power steering, and cooling systems; utilizes computerized diagnostics.

                

5.            Fabricates and repairs metal parts using welding equipment.

                

6.            Enters daily service notes on work orders including appropriate service/repair codes, labor hours, and thorough yet concise descriptions of vehicle and equipment repairs and maintenance.

                

7.            Assists other mechanics with repairs as required.

                

8.            Represents the City of Casper by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor.


9.            Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

 

Knowledge (position requirements at entry):

Knowledge of:

•             Maintaining and repairing a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.

•             Operation and care of hydraulic equipment.

•             Methods, materials, and tools used in routine welding and fabrication work.

•             Applicable tools and equipment utilized in the mechanic trade.

•             Engine repair techniques.

•             Diagnostic devises utilized in identifying vehicle and/or equipment malfunctions.

•             Skilled welding techniques.

•             Record keeping principles and practices.

•             Operating modern office equipment, software and operating systems/applications.

•             Safety procedures.

•             Routinely demonstrate the City of Casper core values.

•             Accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs.

•             Provide and properly maintain an adequate inventory of tools and equipment.

•             Mentor other technicians to help develop and build their skills.

•             Operate a variety of power-driven equipment.

•             Perform a variety of vehicle maintenance and repair work.

•             Operating modern office equipment, software, and operating systems/applications.

•             Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

•             Follow written and verbal instructions and direction.

•             Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

•             Follows all City safety procedures. Reports all accidents/incidents and unsafe conditions immediately to supervisor.

•             Operating in a courteous, knowledgeable and tactful manner with staff and general public.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

•             High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) required.

•             Associates Degree in Automotive Technology and/or a minimum of six (6) ASE or similar technical certifications that demonstrate knowledge equivalent to a two-year program preferred.

•             Minimum of two years’ experience performing automotive maintenance and repair work or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed below.


LICENSING and CERTIFICATIONS

•             Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Wyoming driver’s license is preferred.

As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must utilize direct deposit for payroll purposes.  
 
Driving records are required for all new employees regardless of the position's driving requirements. If the employee has not held a Wyoming driver's license for the last three years, the employee must provide at their own initiation and expense a driving record from their previous state(s) of residence.
 
Physical and Environmental Conditions:  

City of Casper employees in data creation and modification, security sensitive or safety and protective positions are subject to pre-employment drug testing. Some employees may be subject to random drug testing if their responsibilities include: 

  • Emergency response/rescue
  • Handling or working with hazardous materials, including chemicals as well as solid and liquid waste
  • Operating or maintaining water and wastewater systems
  • Writing or modifying code, maintaining or modifying City data systems including work on networks, servers, and communication systems
  •  CDL operations and driving
  •  Operating power-driven machinery or equipment
  •  Creating or modifying health, financial, security and or risk documents or assessments
  •  Working with or directing minors 


Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up-to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up-to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Incumbent may be subject to moving mechanical parts, dusts, fumes, odors, dusts, gasses, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, high vibration, extreme climate/weather conditions, and high noise levels using various equipment types.
