About the Program and Instructor Role
The YMCA’s Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program helps participants build the habit of tracking their blood pressure to reduce their risk of stroke and heart disease. As an instructor, you will provide guidance, encouragement, and accountability to support participants in reaching their health goals.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Program Instructor at the La Porte County Family YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for participants in classes and/or activities.  This role involves planning and delivering appropriate activities that support the YMCA mission.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Fulfill Y’s mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
  2. Conduct classes/programs when scheduled while maintaining a safe environment.
  3. Instructor will be responsible for finding a replacement if they are unable to lead their scheduled class/program.   Instructors may not cancel class/program without the permission of their supervisor and the supervisor must be contacted a minimum of 24 hours in advance.
  4. Instructor must be fully prepared and on time for all classes/program.
  5. Must set up and put away equipment and/or supplies used in conjunction with the class/program.
  6. Instructors will dress and act in a professional and appropriate manner.
  7. Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures. 
  8. Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.  Report any issues or safety concerns immediately to supervisor.
  9. Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  10. Know appropriate emergency and safety procedures and proper exits for everyone in the facility.
  11. Builds relationships with members and building participants.
  12. Communicates effectively with participants and parents/guardians when applicable.
  13. Participate as an active team member for the overall advancement of the Association.
  14. Exemplify the YMCA core values of caring, respect, responsibility, and honesty.
  15. Promote and incorporate the YMCA’s core values and mission into all aspects of the job in the community.
  16. Perform all other duties as assigned.

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Works effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions.
  2. Experience in specific program area is preferred.
  3. Minimum age requirement is 16 years.
  4. Must possess strong human relations skills and ability to communicate with participants and staff.
  5. Ability to lead a group while maintaining control and structure.
  6. Required trainings:
    1. Within 30 days of hire:     Child Abuse Prevention (West Bend online).
    2. Within 30 days of hire:     Blood Borne Pathogens (West Bend online).
    3. Within 60 days of hire:     CPR and First Aid
    4. Within 90 days of hire:     Listen First and Y Welcome

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing duties of this job, the employee is often required to:  climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach with hands, sit stand for an extended period of time, climb ladders, walk, shovel snow, plow snow, lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, have finger dexterity, grasp, perform repetitive motions, talk, hear, and have visual acuity.
  2. The employee may be exposed to cleaning chemicals and may be exposed to pool chemicals as well.
  3. The work is performed both indoors and out and may require travel to various locations.
  4. While performing the duties of this job the employee will be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time and will be exposed to hot and cold conditions.
  5. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close & distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to focus.
