Part-time, hourly position (20 to 24 hours per week)
Reports to Manager of Volunteers
The Richmond SPCA is a non-profit organization located in the heart of Richmond, Virginia. As a leader in the field of animal welfare, we are cultivating a community committed to saving, protecting and enriching animal lives with a mission to provide education and resources to achieve and sustain a no-kill community. Annually, we rescue, rehabilitate and find homes for about 4,000 homeless animals while also providing our region with vital safety net programs designed to keep thousands of pets in loving homes and out of shelters. The Volunteer Administrative and Training Assistant will help train and maintain a team of dedicated volunteers, and will support the Richmond SPCA's lifesaving mission through creative use of our volunteers' time and talents.
Essential Functions
- Collaborate with other members of the Volunteer Management Team to execute department goals and strategies, especially the support of other departments through volunteer assistance.
- Supervise individual volunteers and volunteer groups.
- Provide prompt and polite assistance to prospective and active volunteers via phone, email, and in person.
- Accurately perform administrative tasks including daily entry of volunteer timesheets, weekly inventories of volunteer security access cards, and weekly dog lists for our Running Buddies volunteer program.
- Assist with volunteer onboarding.
- Train volunteers on Richmond SPCA policies regarding general volunteer assistance and animal handling.
- Monitor and post on volunteer social media outlets related to department updates/changes.
- Assist in the design and development of training materials and resources for volunteers, including digital and print media.
- Assist with recruiting and supervising volunteers for special events including, but not limited to the Fur Ball, Dog Jog, 5K Run and Block Party, Fidos After 5, offsite adoption events, and community informational tables.
- Assist with planning, setting up, and hosting volunteer appreciation events.
- Ensure that volunteers consistently feel valued for their work and that they recognize the importance of the assistance they provide.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- 18 years of age or older
- Daytime availability
- Strong computer skills and the ability to learn new software programs as needed (daily use of Microsoft 365 products including Word, Excel, Planner, To Do, Outlook)
- Proven ability to deliver engaging and effective training sessions to diverse audiences
- Adaptability in daily routine and able to react to change productively
- Ability to work in a high volume, fast-paced environment
- Reliable transportation
- Comfort handling/learning to handle both dogs and cats
- Strong commitment to reward-based, positive reinforcement training methods and no-kill principles (including spay/neuter and pet adoption)
- Participation in all required trainings and meetings

- Experience with Better Impact volunteer management software preferred, but not required
- Experience with volunteer coordination, training, or in a related field is preferred, but not required
Physical Job Requirements
- Able to work around animals (including those who are sick or injured or who have behavior challenges), loud noises, cat litter, animal waste, and various chemicals
- Able to be on your feet for extended periods of time
- Able to routinely lift 30 to 40 pounds
- Able to push/pull a large cart
- Able to stoop and use stairs
Work Environment
- Rapid pace with limited exposure to potential hazards including animal waste and disinfectants
- High levels of noise at times
- Potential for animal bites and scratches and zoonotic disease (transmitted from animals to people)
