Responsible for coding outpatient medical records according to coding guidelines to ensure accurate and timely codes for bills to be processed. Reviews medical record documentation, assigns appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes, and investigates and resolves diagnosis coding issues. Codes and charges outpatient, emergency room and observation cases using ICD-10 and CPT codes.
Principal Accountabilities:
Assigns codes in accordance with ICD - 10, CPT, and E/M coding guidelines to provide statistical information for research, reimbursement and analysis of quality of care.
- Investigates and resolves coding issues.
- Acts as a liaison between coding guidelines and codes.
- Stays abreast of all ICD10 and CPT code changes, completes all Coding Clinics and maintains coding credentials up to date.
- Keeps up to date with all charging guidelines and keeps proficient with the E/M Charge calculator point system and associated rules.
- Maintains proficiency with all EPIC and 3M360 application procedures with respect to coding, missing documentation, and efficient working of all WQs as to maintain the best turnaround time in coding/billing.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
- AHIMA coding certification CCS (CCS- AHIMA’s Certified Coding Specialist-CCA or CPC also accepted for outpatient coding positions
- Minimum 2 years of coding experience in an acute care setting or relevant.
- Proficiency in medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, disease processes.
- Proficiency in CPT4, E/M, ICD-10 coding.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
Preferred:
Prior admin or assistant experience.
