Hiring Range: $26.83 to $29.83 per hour
Pay Grade: 110
Full Pay Range: $26.83 to $40.25 per hour

Position Summary:
Performs assigned duties encompassing all areas of the treatment plant including operations, laboratory analysis, maintenance, and repair of treatment plant equipment; sampling and testing; supporting projects; and other related work within the Utilities Division.
Essential Duties:
- Monitors the wastewater treatment process to ensure effluent water quality compliance is maintained.
- Conducts facility rounds to perform equipment inspections, record meter reads, and collect data.
- Collects samples of raw and treated wastewater for lab analysis.
- Conducts tests to monitor the biological process; troubleshoots process control changes.
- Monitors pump operation, records pump readings, and programs timers.
- Operates dewatering equipment; operates and maintains the recharge/reuse effluent delivery system.
- Maintains buildings and grounds; mows, pulls weeds, and cleans up; paints, sweeps, mops, and dusts.
- Performs laboratory analysis.
- Perform standard microbiological and analytical analysis of wastewater samples.
- Maintain documentation as required for lab licensure; maintain daily, monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
- Assists in repairing process equipment.
- Operates backhoe and assorted pieces of machinery.
- Provides accurate documentation and computer data entry.
- Reports process and equipment failures.
- Conducts facility tours; answers or refers questions to educate the public regarding the wastewater treatment process and/or effluent delivery system.
- Assists with snow removal.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or any equivalent required. Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position equivalent to two (2) years of experience in wastewater treatment plant operations.
Licensing, Certification, and Other Requirements:
Experience equivalent to two (2) years in operations, laboratory analysis, and/or maintenance of a Wastewater Treatment Plant. Must possess an Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification or be able to obtain within one (1) year of hire. Must obtain Grade II within 18 months of obtaining Grade I and must obtain Grade III within 18 months of obtaining Grade II.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local rules, regulations, policies, and procedures regarding the proper methods and techniques of operating a wastewater treatment facility and compliance laboratory.
- Knowledge of various chemicals used in wastewater treatment and their volatility factors.
- Knowledge of mathematics and microbiology.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.
- Knowledge of state and federal regulations, standards, and criteria regarding the reuse and recharge of effluent.
- Knowledge of wastewater equipment.
- Skill in utilizing public relations techniques in responding to inquiries and complaints.
- Skill in performing general building/grounds maintenance and repairs.
- Skill in operating and maintaining wastewater treatment plant equipment.
- Ability to perform laboratory analysis.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and other divisions.
Physical Demands And Working Conditions:
- Work is performed at a plant location.
- Requires working on-call on a rotating schedule.
- Performs work in hazardous conditions including sewage; potentially infectious wastes, methane, hydrogen sulfide, and other possible toxic gases and substances; rotating equipment; noise; high-medium-low voltage; hazardous environments; and in confined spaces and high traffic areas.
- Safely operates required equipment and City vehicles as needed.
- Safely performs manual labor for extended periods of time and lifts 60 pounds frequently with a maximum of 100 pounds.
- Clear, concise, and effectively communicate in person, over the radio, and by telephone.
- Work is performed part of the time working in an environment where errors in this job can lead to significant physical or mental consequences for self or others.
