Since 1971, Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board has provided the highest quality of behavioral health services to residents of the cities of Hampton and Newport News, Virginia, offering a comprehensive array of programs for both children and adults living with mental illness, developmental disabilities, and/or substance use disorders.

Your day to day as a SUD Counselor

As a Full-Time SUD Counselor at Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, you will manage a predetermined caseload within an outpatient setting, local jails, or the Newport News Drug Court programs. Your role will be integral in assessing and evaluating incoming clients, providing individual, group, and family counseling, as well as conducting educational sessions and discharge/aftercare planning for those grappling with substance use disorder. Core responsibilities include performing intake assessments, diagnosing conditions, crafting treatment plans, and maintaining thorough records. You will engage in crisis intervention and case management while serving as a liaison between the criminal justice system and substance use treatment agencies. Additionally, you will conduct regular individual and group counseling sessions, develop individualized treatment and discharge plans, and complete ongoing progress notes based on each client's counseling sessions.

Your presence in Drug Court sessions with clients will underscore your commitment to their rehabilitation journey.

Requirements for this SUD Counselor job

To excel as a Full-Time SUD Counselor at Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, a robust skill set is essential. A Bachelor's Degree in Human Services, coupled with a minimum of one year of experience in a substance use disorder or correctional setting, forms the foundation of your qualifications. Candidates who hold a Virginia licensed Certification as a Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) will have a competitive advantage.

In addition, possessing a valid Virginia driver's license is crucial for transporting clients as needed. Proficiency in software tools relevant to case management and documentation is also important. Skills in crisis intervention, individual and group counseling, and strong communication abilities are vital for effective collaboration with clients and other stakeholders.

Furthermore, certification in CPR and First Aid ensures your readiness to respond to emergencies, reinforcing your commitment to client safety and well-being in this challenging but rewarding role.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:
