The Musical Archivist will provide assessment and re-appraisal services for archival collections at a central federal library in the Washington, DC Metro Area. The Archivist will primarily work with paper-based materials and photographs, ensuring archival holdings are properly evaluated, organized, described, and preserved. The successful candidate will have strong archival knowledge, familiarity with American history and culture, and the ability to apply professional archival techniques to support ongoing collection management.


Responsibilities

  • Conduct assessments and re-appraisals of archival collections, focusing on paper-based materials and photographs.
  • Apply principles and best practices of archival work, including analysis, arrangement, description, and documentation of materials.
  • Identify preservation concerns and perform basic preservation activities such as rehousing, photocopying, and stabilizing archival materials.
  • Collaborate with library staff to ensure proper handling, transfer, and description of archival materials.
  • Maintain accurate records, inventories, and finding aids to facilitate access and control.
  • Communicate effectively with federal library staff and contribute to a team-based work environment.
  • Safely lift, move, and rehouse boxes and archival materials weighing up to 35 pounds.



Requirements

  • Knowledge of archival principles, concepts, and techniques, including arrangement, description, and appraisal of archival materials.
  • Knowledge of American history, culture, documentary studies, oral history, and related subject areas.
  • Ability to process and describe archival collections in alignment with professional archival standards.
  • Ability to identify preservation concerns and perform basic preservation duties.
  • Minimum of six (6) months of experience working in a library or archives environment performing similar archival tasks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively with library staff.
  • Ability to lift to 35 pounds.

  

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to move from place to place within the location, lifting of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to 35 pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
