Job Summary

The Environmental and Cultural Resources Team is looking for a qualified paleontologist to assist with projects in both the office and in the field.  The applicant must have strong writing skills and should be familiar with proper fossil identification and preservation processes.  Successful applicants will have previous experience planning and completing paleontology projects in the Upper Plains region, be able to be permitted with federal agencies in Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, North Daokta, be willing to work in a team to complete other permitting projects, be able to multi-task, and be a strong communicator.

VPS specializes in telecommunications projects in more than 40 states.  This job is office based in the Rapid City, South Dakota office.  

Responsibilities and Duties

• Coordinate with engineers, project managers, and right-of-way specialists for environmental and cultural resource concerns
• Coordinate with federal and state agencies on current permitting requirements
• Assist the senior paleontologist with writing and preparation of proposals, Phase I/Class I reports, and providing technical professional opinions for project planning
• Organize and plan field projects of various sizes, in multiple states
• Assist with archeological and environmental field surveys and reports, as needed

Qualifications and Skills

• Master’s degree or higher in one of the following fields (or related field): paleontology (focus in vertebrate paleontology), geology (with a paleontological focus)
• Valid US Driver’s license, clean driving record
• Strong organizational skills
• Ability to work independently under minimal supervision
• Ability to be in the field/travel mandatory (40% office/60% field on average, more during summer months/field season)

Compensation and Benefits:

This position offers $23-26 pr/hour depending on experience and an attractive benefits package including per diem (no receipts) when away from office/home base, medical, dental, vision, life, disability insurance, 401(k), and more.
