The Barco Labs Healthcare Innovation team operates like an internal startup and is dedicated to shaping the future of healthcare. This multidisciplinary team—comprising technical experts and researchers, commercial strategists, and clinical experts —are constantly looking to develop solutions that improve patient care and healthcare models.
By adopting an entrepreneurial mindset, we focus on the real needs of healthcare professionals and patients. In close collaboration with hospitals, healthcare providers, patients, and regulatory bodies, we guide innovations through the entire development cycle. From ideation and MVP definition to market evaluation, business case creation, R&D, and clinical validation, our team ensures that each solution meets the highest standards. We manage every step, from the creation of proof-of-concepts and market validation to commercial introduction and early-stage sales, making sure our innovations have a lasting impact on the healthcare industry.
Purpose of the job
As Research Engineer you will be contributing to a variety of innovations for healthcare applications, with special focus on image acquisition, image processing, image normalization and image transmission technologies. Together with a team consisting of researchers, developers, product managers and clinical experts, you will be able to contribute to the future of healthcare.
As a Research Engineer, you
- Are an outcome-oriented expert, you seek to in-depth understand end-user, partner, and patient problems and think of innovative solutions.
- Implement iteratively and in close collaboration with internal and external (clinical) partners, first-of-a-kind prototypes and proof of concepts
- Stay up to date with the new academic, international standardization, regulatory and commercial developments and trends in healthcare imaging and visualization applications
- You share and interact around these insights with your peers, both internally and externally (conferences)
- Are a team player, you collaborate with your peers, internal stakeholders and external partners to develop and demonstrate innovative solutions to challenging problems.
We are looking for a colleague who
- Has a Master Degree in Engineering or Informatics with expertise in Image Processing, Computer Vision, Electronics, or a closely related field.
- Has experience with working in a medical device development context (MDD/MDR, regulatory pathways, Software As a Medical Device)
- We are looking for a colleague who ideally brings the following experience and expertise, or has the ambition to grow into these areas within 2–3 years:
- Design and validation of image acquisition solutions, including sensor selection, scene illumination, image encoding and transmission.
- Acquisition optimization algorithms such as auto-focus, auto-exposure and automatic white balancing, as well as image stabilization techniques.
- Image processing algorithms, such as HDR processing, denoising, contrast enhancement, color normalization, …
- Has basic knowledge of medical imaging applications, such as digital pathology, mammography, radiology & surgical imaging.
- The following is a plus:
- Experience with electronics design
- Experience with optics design
- Experience with stereoscopic imaging
- Knowledge about color science, quantifying perceived variability in an imaging chain, human perception, metamerism, environmental light impact
- Experience with image processing, visualization and rendering technologies, such as OpenCV, OpenGL, …
- Experience with display technologies, such as HDR, wide gamut, … and their impact on human perception.
- Proficiency in dealing with Linux compute environments.
- Experience with scientific publications
- Works thoroughly and can work independently and with great perseverance towards a result that meets the requirements and constraints, that is evaluated and documented and meets the quality level expected in a healthcare context.
- Is pro-active, takes initiative and shows end-to-end problem ownership.
- Is a loyal team player with good (English) communication skills, Dutch is a plus.
