Job Summary:

The Operations Trainer is responsible for the development and implementation of a robust training program for CVRK’s operations personnel. This position will work in close collaboration with the Manager for Training and Workforce Development to enhance procedural accuracy. They will close knowledge gaps and ensure compliance with all relevant safety and regulatory standards (PSM/CalARP). This position will bring hands-on unit operations experience and a strong understanding of refinery processes, startup/shutdown procedures, and documentation practices.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive operations training program based on real-world refinery experience.
  • Lead the development and verification of operating procedures in accordance with PSM and CalARP requirements.
  • Serve as a point of contact for procedure creation, editing, redlining, and updates under the MOC (Management of Change) process.
  • Relieve operations staff from the burden of procedure documentation by owning the QA/QC and technical validation processes.
  • Conduct classroom and field-based training sessions focused on safe, compliant operation of refinery units.
  • Ensure training materials are accurate, current, and reflective of actual field practices.
  • Track, document, and maintain operator qualification records, including startup/shutdown procedural signoffs.
  • Support the accelerated learning and onboarding of new operators through structured development programs.
  • Provide an unbiased, experienced perspective to identify gaps in procedures or training execution.
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations to validate technical details in all training and procedure materials.
  • Manage and QA/QC procedures used and signed off by operations personnel (Executed Procedure Audit).
  • Ability to qualify as a backup/relief operator in at least 3/6 areas by first year with long term qualification in 6/6 areas
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned

 

Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • Able to give and receive feedback and constructive criticism from a variety of channels
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Understands plant integration and impact of common systems (such as utilities, hydrogen, amine systems) on various units
  • Has a fundamental understanding of process and equipment operation, such as distillation, hydrotreating, pump and compressor details.  
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong knowledge of hydroprocessing 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
  • Experience with Operational Excellence initiatives and audits a plus

 

  • Manages operations training schedules and training budgets

 

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • At least ten years of operational refinery or chemical plant experience required, preferred to have increasing operations training management responsibility
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing and delivering operator training programs.
  • In-depth knowledge of PSM (Process Safety Management) and CalARP requirements.
  • Proven experience with writing, reviewing, and updating operational procedures.
  • Strong communication skills – verbal, written, and instructional.
  • Ability to manage multiple training projects simultaneously in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills, including QA/QC processes.
  • Experience in a training or instructional design role within a refinery or petrochemical environment.
  • Previous leadership or supervisory experience in operations is a plus
  • Experience on HAZOPs teams a plus

Physical Requirements: 

  • Must be able to pass a physical test of pushing, pulling, and lifting a minimum of 50 lbs
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and wear self-contained breathing apparatus
  • Must be able to climb ladders and or stairs on tanks, vessels and structures; wear respirator; work around equipment containing high pressures and temperatures and various chemicals
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking
  • Ability to perform repetitive movements over long periods of time
  • Requires frequent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching
  • Requires lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring equipment and materials
