JOB SUMMARY
Under limited supervision, is responsible for monthly pest control of buildings and facilities owned by the Town of Summerville; operates a truck and/or tractor equipment and other machinery as necessary to perform pesticide spraying and routine operations. Work involves serving as licensed pesticide applicator and attending classes for new and updated information on pesticides and the different disease on plants and trees; receiving credits to keep and maintain license; and teaching about the safe handling of pesticides and herbicides.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Sprays pesticides and fertilizer on the ball fields, parks, and playgrounds in the Town of Summerville.
- Sprays weed killer on roads and highways.
- Sprays and maintains aquatic ponds in the parks.
- Maintains records on all the applications of the products that are dispensed and sprayed on ball fields.
- Plants trees and shrubs in the parks and major roadways.
- Plants and fertilizes the flowerbeds when needed; and installs and maintains irrigation systems in the parks, ball fields, and other designated areas in the Town.
- Performs electrical work when setting up and removing lights in the trees for the holiday season.
- Performs some plumbing and carpentry work throughout the year when needed.
- Receives and/or reviews a variety of records and reports such as product list and purchase orders.
- Prepares and/or processes a variety of documentation such as chemical list, label instructions, and college classes.
- Refers to chemical books, plant and tree books, supervisor, product representative, policy and procedure manuals, codes/laws/regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.
- Operates a variety of equipment and machinery (such as tractor, sprayer, etc.).
- Uses a variety of tools (such as measuring cups, scales, etc.); and a variety of supplies (such as chemicals, fertilizer, pesticides, plant seeds, general office supplies, etc.).
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals (such as Parks and Recreation Director, coworkers, other Town employees, and the general public.).
- Update the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Requires a technical college diploma with one to two years’ experience or training in pesticides; or any equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license. Must be certified with a South Carolina Pesticide Applicator License.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of the methods, policies, and procedures of the Parks and Recreation Department pertaining to the specific duties of the Pesticide Technician.
- Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.
- Knowledge of the methods, processes, procedures and regulations involved within pesticide operations.
- Knowledge of restricted and non-restricted pesticides.
- Knowledgeable of the levels of productivity and quality to be produced on the job and is able to meet such criteria accordingly.
- Knowledge of how to operate and utilize an assortment of equipment, machinery, and tools used in daily pesticide operations.
- Ability to oversee activities of community service workers in an effective manner.
- Ability to follow specific instructions and to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations.
- Ability to organize and prioritize daily work assignments and activities.
- Ability to maintain control and inventory of pesticides used.
- Ability to coordinate and work well with others.
- Ability to prepare and process the required reports and records in a timely and efficient manner.
- Ability to perform the required mathematical calculations accurately and quickly.
- Ability to offer assistance to co-workers as necessary.
- Ability to learn and apply new skills needed in order to promote efficient completion of duties.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Tasks involve the regular and at times sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds) and occasionally heavier weight (up to 100 pounds).
