Position Summary
This position requires the Registered Pharmacy Technician to assist the Pharmacist in routine; non-judgmental activities associated with the preparation and delivery of pharmaceutical services.
Job Duties & Essential Functions
Assist the pharmacist subject to the limitations set forth in the Rules of the Board of Regents, University of the State of New York, Education Department, section 29.7.
Provide assistance to the pharmacist to carry out those aspects of the dispensing of drugs which are technical in nature which do not involve the exercise of professional judgment. All activities of the pharmacy technician shall be reviewed and approved by a pharmacist at the completion of these activities.
Activities include but not limited to cart filling medications, addressing patient discharges, transfers, and new admissions, delivering medications to all nursing units, unit dosing medications from bulk containers, cleaning the isolator, batching IV piggy backs, addressing crash carts, ALS Boxes, and kits located in the pharmacy and other areas of the hospital.
Inventory Control - All activities including but not limited to ordering, receiving and stocking of drugs. Restocking medications in Omnicells within nursing units, performing cycle counts, adding or removing medications. This responsibility will also include assisting in the annual physical inventory.
Inspections - Includes all activities necessary to assure the proper storage and security of drugs, removal of outdated or recalled drugs, both in the Pharmacy Department and other areas of the hospital where drugs are kept. Monthly cleaning of the Omnicells and medication refrigerators.
Transportation - All normal and customary messenger service needed during routine departmental activities. At times it may be necessary to provide transport outside of the hospital.
Clerical - All activities related to office management including, but not limited to, processing of patient charges or credits, processing invoices, filing, and answering the telephone.
All other duties as assigned by the Director of Pharmacy.
Maintain order and cleanliness.
Cooperates with all personnel in the proper conduct of the department.
Rotates within the department and by shift as required.
Maintains ethical relationships.
Adheres to hospital and departmental rules and regulations.
Participate in in-service programs.
Required Education & Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent
Current valid NY State Registered Pharmacy Technician license and registration
Current valid Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Health career Association (NHA) Pharmacy Technician certification
Preferred Education & Qualifications
Associate’s degree
Prior Pharmacy Technician experience
Sterile compounding experience
Computer skills with Microsoft Word and Excel
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with patients, office staff and medical providers. The employee must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
Satisfactory verbal communications.
Adequate vision.
Adequate hearing.
Ability to use a short ladder.
Ability to lift thirty (30) pounds off the floor onto a countertop.
Adequate mobility to retrieve stock and transport medication carts.
Adequate manual dexterity to assist in compounding and dispensing of prescriptions, including batching of IV Piggy Backs, IV admixtures and other sterile products (Must be Credentialed).

Anticipated Pay Range:
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBEILH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:
- Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Eastern Long Island’s Employee Health Services *
- Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
- Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
- Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
- Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.
*The Human Resources department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
