Looking for a new and exciting opportunity? We are looking for a Designer, Systems to join our team!
What You Will Do
Reporting to the Senior Designer, Electro-Mechanical Design, you will be responsible for providing expertise related to the development and selection of appropriate design concepts, analysis of technical data, and production of design information as related to existing and proposed surface and subway track, as well as signaling system design projects on the maintenance and rehabilitation of systems and facilities.
Other responsibilities of your role will include:
- Preparing drawings, estimates, material lists, specifications, standards, policies, work methods, test procedures, designs and schedules for new installations, rehabilitation and emergency work.
- Planning, scheduling and producing detailed designs, contract specifications and engineering drawings for department specific system projects.
- Coordinating, directing and guiding relevant TTC staff and/or consultants, contractors, suppliers and manufacturers in section specific design work, equipment or systems; resolving design issues to ensure compliance with TTC design standards and specifications.
- Investigating, evaluating & testing new and existing or proposed systems, components and/or construction methods; troubleshooting operating problems, malfunctions/faults and recommending alternate design, procedures, equipment, materials and related matters.
- Compiling cost and quantity estimates for specific projects, programs and budget purposes; assisting with the preparation of budgets/cash flows and monitor where necessary to meet project and departmental goals and objectives.
- Initiating relevant procurement processes, reviewing technical proposals and quotations from consultants for compliance with branch requirements, evaluating tenders, recommending for award and monitor progress.
- Liaising with relevant TTC staff and external personnel to ensure design requirements are included in drawings and coordinating and schedule design, procurement and installation.
- Providing technical support and engineering guidance to relevant staff outside of regular working hours during emergency situations when required.
- Preparing TTC reports, technical reports, project status reports, recommendations related to the work, and other correspondence as required.
- Providing design review expertise of submissions at various stages of design and providing comments concerning compliance with Subway Operations Branch requirements.
- Performing feasibility studies, surveys and assessing the condition of existing systems and equipment, determining the extent of repair, safety of equipment and systems; performing random audits at sites to determine quality assurance and conformance to design.

- Your certification through the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) will be considered an asset.
- You will have thorough knowledge of the theory, principles and best practices of system design methods and approaches.
- Your application will demonstrate experience providing counsel to support complex multi-discipline projects.
- It will also reveal your experience working in the rail industry integrating vehicle systems.
- You will have good knowledge of the rules and regulations associated with the operation of a transit system.
- Your sound reasoning, analytical and technical judgement supported by critical-thinking skills and holistic approaches to problem-solving will be beneficial in this role.
- You will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- You will have an understanding of and experience in Risk Management practices.
