Primary Purpose: The Lentil and Faba Bean Breeding Program at the Crop Development Centre, Department of Plant Sciences, University of Saskatchewan requires two Senior Research Assistants who will lead the research team to support research and development of improved lentil and faba bean varieties.
Nature of Work: Reporting to the lentil and faba bean breeder the candidate will be tasked as program coordinator, managing field operations, including logistics, equipment, data and personnel. Responsible for conducting all activities in the breeding program adhering to safety protocols. Travel to off-station sites and overtime including evenings and weekends will be required at certain times of the year particularly during planting (May) and harvest (August/September). Due to the nature of this position, start times may vary due to weather conditions.
Education: BSc degree in Agriculture. A MSc degree in a plant science-related field would be an asset.
Licenses: Candidates must hold a valid class 5 driver’s license and pesticide application training. Candidates should have or be willing to obtain WHMIS, First Aid and CPR training.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in crop research and experience operating plot equipment such as tractors and combines will be an asset.
Skills: A combination of technical expertise, problem-solving abilities, strong communication, time management and organizational skills, adaptability, attention to detail, leadership and the ability to work independently are required.
Typical Duties: planning, coordinating, scheduling and conducting field work in Saskatchewan and preparing contra season. Managing vehicles and equipment including maintenance and repairs. Ensuring compliance with safety protocols and regulations. Supervising and mentoring junior field technicians. Managing inventory and supplies. Managing and approving vacations and time sheets for staff members. Data management and analysis. Preparing reports on research findings. Supervising crosses and advancing early generation populations in indoor growing facilities. Supervising seed phenotyping and preparation. Managing seed inventories. Assisting other researchers (graduate students, research assistants, research officers) in executing their field work. Contributing to the development of new research methodologies. Responsibilities will be assigned among senior technicians based on qualifications.

Salary: The salary range, based on 1.0 FTE, is $71,630.00 - 100,321.52 per annum. The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
