Purpose/Summary
The classroom teacher is responsible for creating a positive learning environment where students develop the skills to become critical thinkers, problem solvers, lifelong learners, and productive citizens.
Teachers maintain a safe environment; establish rapport with students, parents, and colleagues; motivate pupils to develop attitudes and knowledge that will help them reach their potential and be prepared for higher levels of education.
Provide an educational atmosphere in which students will move toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and psychological growth and maturation in accordance with system philosophy, goals and objectives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Will follow a course of study following the design developed by the teachers and administration. It shall be regularly revised according to the recommendations of the teachers, administration, and the State Department of Education.
• Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity of the students.
• Plan and implement lesson plans that meet individual needs, interests, and abilities within the Sullivan County curriculum.
• Monitor and assess student progress and provide feedback on a regular basis to students and parents/guardians.
• Maintain a careful record of each student’s attendance. All excuses for absences shall be collected and turned into the office daily.
• Develop a systematic grading procedure according to the policies of the school and maintain neat and thorough records of student achievement.
• Assist each student to develop personal levels of performance appropriate to the student’s ability.
• Responsible for presenting appropriate, effective, and orderly instructional lessons by utilizing appropriate teaching techniques and instructional materials.
• Maintain appropriate student behavior in the classrooms. In addition, all professional employees have the responsibility of student control and discipline in the halls, classroom, during assemblies, /programs, etc.
• Maintain accurate, complete, legible, and correct records as required by the law, Mars Area School District policy and administrative regulation.
• Actively participates in in-service training sessions. In-service and class preparation time is to be spent involved in professional activities, such as, preparation and revision of instructional materials and being informed of education developments.
• Assume individual responsibilities assigned by the Building Principal which may relate to student activities, student supervision or other planning and professional assignments.
• Represent the District in a professional, ethical, and positive manner.
• Must appropriately handle confidential information.
Assumes any other responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent of School or Executive Director or Designee.
EVALUATION: Annually or Bi-Annually by the Building Principal in accordance with the PA Department of Education requirements.
Education and/or Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in education/ Subject Area
• Proper valid Pennsylvania teacher certification required.
• Dual Certified
• Knowledge of current reading research and effective instructional practices
• Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

• Academic Skills – Knowledge of K-12 Education.

• Patience: Patience is another skill that teachers can use to help their students. Reading is a process that can take time, and it’s important for reading specialists to be patient with their students as they work to improve their reading skills.
• Technology Skills – Utilize all available technology necessary to complete requested tasks. Demonstrate with up-to-date computer software, including use of email programs, word processing, Excel, web page development, presentation, and accounting software programs. Ability to coordinate and update technology resources in an organized and retrievable protocol.

Physical Demands
Must be able to travel between school buildings, other Districts, and various external locations. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk, and must be able to stand for extended periods of time. Must possess the manual dexterity necessary to effectively utilize keyboards and other technology with repetitive movement of hands and fingers.
Must be able to see and hear on a continuous basis as well as speak frequently. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, far, and peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must possess the ability to see, hear, and talk to ascertain personnel effectiveness. The position requires meeting deadlines with severe time constraints and interacting with the public and staff. This job requires the ability to balance multiple demands effectively and simultaneously.
