About the Department

To establish a list of eligible candidates that will be used to fill current and any future vacancies (part-time, permanent and temporary) for the duration of the list, up to a year. The vacancy is a 10-month, part time position located with Student Support Services.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Completed applications must be submitted no later than 11:59 p.m. on September 26, 2025Late applications and/or certificates will not be accepted.
 
TESTING PROCESS: 
A) Multiple Choice Test = 40% weighting on final score
Tentatively scheduled for the week of September 29, 2025.
B) Structured Interview = 60% weighting on final score
Tentatively scheduled for the week of October 6, 2025.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications stated in the job posting by the application deadline in order to move forward in the testing process. Those candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to the multiple choice test. Those with the highest scores on the multiple choice test will be invited to the structured interview. Those who pass the structured interview will complete a computer applications test administered online. The testing process is subject to change as needs dictate. All communication regarding this process will be delivered via email.

Summary 

Provides specialized support and service in job development for young adults with special needs. Performs activities such as soliciting employer interest and involvement in the employment of students, orienting students to the services provided, developing student work skills, and providing general office support.

Distinguishing Career Features 

The Transitional Assistant provides technical services and support in vocational employment and job search and transitional activities for students with special needs. Advancement to the Transitional Assistant requires competency in pre-employment activities, and researching and locating employers with potential job offerings for students’ skill level, and matching student backgrounds with jobs.

Position Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

• Explores careers, develops jobs, and places, monitors and supports individuals as needed. Establishes, maintains and continually updates job lists consisting of current and prospective employer information and job and life skill specifications. 

• Contacts prospective employers by telephone and in-person to set up hiring opportunities and profiles. Schedules and visits various employers to identify potential positions for students and promotes the District’s vocational job placement services. Provides employers with information about prospective student trainees/employees. 

• Conducts individual and group instruction in employment skills and work-maturity skills including resume development, interview skills, employer expectations, independent-living skills, positive work attitudes, developing initiative, motivation and responsibility. Provides orientation to targeted students on the nature of vocational employment opportunities. 

• Assists teachers and program specialists with matching students to jobs based on aptitude, level of learning development, life skills, and interest. 

• Refers vocationally-oriented students to suitable employment opportunities and/or internships and coordinates referrals and services with specially-funded work programs. Assists in the development and implementation of transition activities. 

• Confers with Workability Coordinator, Student Support Services personnel and/or teachers concerning student needs; alerts to any special problems or information concerning students. 

• Documents student progress and performance using the individualized education plan as a guide. 

• Compiles statistics and other data for special reports. Prepares and maintains a variety of files and records, including data collection and portfolio information required by the state, for classroom or assigned program. 

• Travels to assigned schools to assist with the transitional activities of students. Escorts students to job sites or transition activities. Drives students to and from job sites or identified transition activity. Accompanies students and provides instruction regarding use of the public transportation system. 

• Assists employers with orientation of students to work methods, specific assignments and work rules. 

• Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position. 

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications 

Education and Experience 
Requires an Associates degree in a related field and one year experience working with special education students in a secondary school environment and/or progressive experience in an employment, job training or equivalent environment. Additional related experience may substitute for some higher education based on one year of experience for one year of college. 

Licenses and Certificates 
Requires a valid California driver’s license. Requires valid first aid and CPR certification; employee must fulfill this certification requirement within six months of employment in a regular position.

Knowledge and Skills 
The position requires: Basic knowledge of recruitment and employment techniques, methods, and procedures including those for reaching students with special job and life skill needs. Knowledge of the principles and practices of age appropriate child development and guidance applicable for an educational setting, including those relating to special education. Knowledge of the rules and regulations governing student employment to vocational occupations. Knowledge of safe and appropriate practices in classroom and community activities. Knowledge of teaching and instruction methods that enhance remedial learning. Basic knowledge of principles and techniques of discipline and behavior modification. Language, grammar, and writing skill to prepare professional correspondence. Sufficient human relation skills to work productively and cooperatively with teachers, colleagues, students, parents and employers in formal and informal settings, to describe program and services available to others, to respect and deal with sensitive and confidential information, to give instructions and training, and to facilitate discussions in individual and small group settings. 

Abilities 
Requires the ability to: Work with secondary level students with a wide range of disabilities and at risk youth. Learn and provide for the special needs, issues and requirements of special education students. Interpret the policies, procedures, techniques, and rules governing student employment and vocational job placement. Assist teaching staff with the implementation of instructional goals and activities, and conducting vocational assessments. Interact with teachers, specialists, colleagues and employers in order to carry out assigned duties. Assist students in developing various self-help skills, including social, community and leisure/recreational skills. Assist in maintaining order among students in their assigned learning environment. Relate positively to students in a teaching/learning environment in a way that builds confidence, recognizes and works on learning disabilities and barriers. Exercise patience when conveying information, and demonstrate sensitivity to the special needs of students. Understand the principles of positive reinforcement as they apply to the management of students. Maintain up-to-date files, and ensure confidentiality and security of student, school and employer information. Setup and maintain records; prepare documentation, reports and professional correspondence for routine communications. Learn how to operate a personal computer and use word processing, spreadsheet and database software programs to prepare documents, enter and tabulate data, and verify and maintain information. Learn district regulations, policies and objectives applicable to assigned programs. Operate instructional and office equipment. Achieve harmony and cooperation in communications with others. 

 Physical Abilities 
Requires: ability to perform in an indoor and/or outdoor learning environment engaged in work of a moderately active nature; near visual acuity to read and write printed materials and computer screens; hearing and speech ability for ordinary and telephonic conversation, to speak to groups, and to hear sound prompts from equipment; ambulatory ability to: move about office, classroom/laboratory, school grounds or other learning environment, assist with instruction and presentations, and reach work materials; sufficient manual and finger dexterity to demonstrate teaching aids, to point out important words/figures to students, and to operate personal computers; and the ability to lift, carry, push, and move supplies, equipment, wheelchairs, etc., of light to medium weight on a regular basis. 

Working Conditions 
Work is performed indoors and outdoors where minimal safety considerations exist.
