DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Perform all mandatory job performance skills and responsibilities of the Emergency Telecommunications Dispatcher I (ETD-I).

  • Remain current and compliant with the procedures of the Communications Basic Telecommunicator Training and Evaluation Program. Readily submit written recommendations or suggested improvements to assigned Supervisor and Training Supervisor.

  • Train and evaluate probationary employees under the direction of assigned Supervisor, Training Supervisor, Assistant Director of Operations or Assistant Director of Administration and Training.

  • Train and evaluate employees in remedial training as assigned by the Training Supervisor, Assistant Director of Administration and Training or Assistant Director of Operations.

  •          Ensure all trainees have adequate understanding of job duties prior to release from training.

  •          Provide guidance to ETD as needed, helping with following procedures or handling priority calls and situations.

  •          Administer and assist with the development of Shift Briefing/Training Bulletin reviews in conjunction with the Training Supervisor or Assistant Director of Administration and Training.

  •          Required work on various projects may be assigned including preparation of monthly newsletter or other assignments, at the discretion of the Assistant Director of Administration and Training or Assistant Director of Operations.

  •          Develop a basic understanding of the implementation of departmental policies and documentation including End of Shift Reports, Notifications and Attendance Records.

  •          Assist with specialty team callouts, incident logging, information dissemination, etc. during priority/significant events.

  •          Obtain advanced knowledge of at least one area of the Communications Training Academy, to the degree of teaching new employees or existing employees.

  •          Demonstrate and model appropriate behavior in the ECC.

  •        Member of EMD Dispatch Review Committee responsible for meeting minutes, action items, and follow up reviews as assigned by the Assistant Director of Administration.

  •          Assist with monthly CJIS validation work as needed.

  •          ETD-IIs receive a variety of operational and technical training in support of their duties.

  •          ETD-IIs are required to obtain and maintain all certifications held by an ETD, as well as a department approved Communications Training Officer Certification.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Must have at least three (3) years of experience as a Cambridge Emergency Telecommunications Dispatcher.  Certification in Call-taking and either Police or Fire Dispatch. Thorough knowledge of ECD’s policy and procedures. Demonstrated knowledge of essential duties and systems related to the work of Emergency Telecommunications Dispatcher.  Maintains a compliant or high compliant rating on EMD calls. Ability to obtain instructor certification through APCO or management approved program.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS: Certification and experience as a Communications Training Officer (CTO). Ability and willingness to obtain cross training certification with adequate training opportunity.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Tasks involve extensive keyboarding on multiple keyboards and attentive listening to telephone calls and radio transmissions (often at a low volume level and of poor audio quality on a department-supplied headset or handset).  Candidates must have the ability to exert very moderate physical effort typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, and lifting, as well as carrying, pushing, and pulling objects and materials of moderate weight, twelve to twenty pounds.   Candidates must be able to work any shift assignments, including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime (both forced and scheduled), and up to 16-hour shifts. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Standard office environment. Fluorescent lighting, and central air conditioning. Moderate noise level, which can elevate with large volume of phone calls from the public. Executes multiple tasks involving keyboarding, telephones, writing, bending, reaching, and lifting (up to 15 lbs.).
