The County of San Diego, Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA)
is currently recruiting for the position of:

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTANT

 Interviews will take place the weeks of October 27 and November 3, 2025. 
Job offer for the selected candidate will take place no later than November 21, 2025.

This position is eligible for appointment at step 1, $119,412.80 annually. County employees are subject to the County Promotion Rule for step placement in accordance with Comp Ord 1.3.5. 

Future Salary Increases
** July 2026 - 3.0% increase to base pay for Across-the-Board
** July 2027 - 3.0% increase to base pay for Across-the-Board


Principal Accountant is a management-level position and the highest class in the professional accountant series. Principal Accountants plan, direct, and administer the general accounting and financial reporting programs of a large department or the development, coordination, control and reporting for a county-wide accounting system. Principal Accountants also act as the department's accounting chief; and provide authoritative review and direction to the department and staff on accounting and budgetary matters.

HIRING PROCESS AND TIMELINE

The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below.
  • Job Offer and Background Process begins shortly after the interviews. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.
  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

A bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in accounting or a closely related field with at least 12 semester or 18 quarter units of accounting from among the following courses: Principles of Accounting, Intermediate Accounting, Advanced Accounting, Fund Accounting, Cost Accounting, or Auditing, OR, a California CPA certification; AND, at least five (5) years of professional accounting experience. Two (2) years of experience supervising professional accounting staff.
 
NOTE: A CPA certificate will be accepted as meeting the education requirement. A master's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in accounting may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

 

As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.
