OVERVIEW

The ESOL Coordinator is responsible for implementing the New York State Office of New Americans ESOL Opportunity Center at the USCRI Albany Field Office.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and schedule ONA Opportunity Center programming in accordance with funding specifications and limitations, including instruction at pre-literate/beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels
  • Proactively recruit and select program participants, members, and volunteers using appropriate promotional or marketing methods, such as individual letters, brochures or presentations at meetings
  • Work cooperatively with other component coordinators to plan education services integrated with health, mental health, nutrition, parent involvement, and social services
  • Assure that files and documentation are complete, accurate, and confidentially maintained
  • Ensure that teaching staff and volunteers are productive and engaging with students, meeting all contract requirements, and fostering a positive team environment
  • Attend stakeholder meetings and foster strong working relationships with community-based organizations, and partner agencies; provide consistent communication with partner agencies to ensure coordinator of services and development of client and funding opportunities
  • Ensure that refugees are being served in a linguistically and culturally appropriate manner and provide education and advocacy when necessary
    • Administer academic and language assessments for the purpose of evaluating the learners progress for meeting academic learning targets and progress in language acquisition
    • Supervise part-time ESOL instructor and volunteers, ensuring quality of instruction and support to students

REQUIREMENTS

  • Certificate in teaching ESOL or two years demonstrated ESOL teaching experience is required

Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Education or related discipline is preferred (but not required)

  • Availability and willingness to work on a variable schedule
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to communicate and build lasting relationships and partnerships with program and field office staff
      • Sensitivity to the development stages and well-being of students
      • Proficient in the use of MS Word, MS Access, MS Excel and database programs
      • Ability to facilitate group discussion, analyze situations, and draw conclusions
      • Highly adaptable and flexible with the ability to multi-task and prioritize in a demanding work environment
        • Must have dedication to human rights of refugees, immigrants, asylum seekers, and displaced people
          • Good sense of humor and pleasant, diplomatic manner is desired

 

 

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

  • Satisfactory completion of USCRI’s Orientation and Training
  • Satisfactory completion of funder required trainings upon hire and on an annual basis
  • Complete additional training as identified by supervisor or Human Resources

 

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Use of manual dexterity, tactile, visual, and audio acuity
  • Use of repetitive motion, prolonged periods of sitting and standing, and sustained visual and mental applications and demands
  • Occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds), bending, pulling, and carrying
  • Quantitative/mathematical ability (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, standard measurements)
