About the Role


We are seeking an Animal Caretaker / Cage Wash Technician I to provide for the daily care of research laboratory animals as well as cagewash support, to ensure their health and welfare within the public health sector for our federal customer. 


This position involves providing routine animal care and husbandry duties, along with reviewing, monitoring, and documenting the health and physical conditions of the animals while practicing infection control. This role also involves cleaning, sanitizing, preparing and maintaining laboratory animal caging and accessory equipment, as well as ensuring compliance with safety and quality assurance guidelines


This is a fully onsite position at our customer's location in Atlanta, Georgia. This position is contingent on contract award. 


Responsibilities

  • Conduct animal husbandry tasks to maintain the quality and health of the research animals, which include, but are not limited to, preparing, changing cages for small and large animals, feeding, manually watering, or monitoring/testing automatic watering devices.  
  • Handle and restrain animals.
  • Maintain and submit accurate records of all feeding and watering performed, as well as required cagewash records, charts, logbooks, checklists and inventories.
  • Conduct daily health assessments of animals and promptly record animal concerns per protocols and alerts designated personnel.
  • Monitor and report any irregularities in the animal environment or any conditions that may affect animals.
  • Support the intake and accommodation of incoming animals.
  • Facilitate the safe and efficient transport of animals, materials, and waste across designated work zones.
  • Meet the daily scheduled output of caging and accessory equipment in support of the non-human primate, large and small animal husbandry operation as directed.
  • Clean, sanitize, sterilize and decontaminate animal caging and accessory equipment.
  • Assist in sanitation and decontamination in all areas of the facility.
  • Dispose of waste from facility in designated containers following appropriate SOPs. 
  • Maintain and perform routine repairs on caging and racks.
  • Perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance on the cage washers and autoclaves, including checking and cleaning filters and roto-arms.
  • Process clean caging and accessory equipment appropriately, including putting bedding into cages and autoclaving cages and supplies.
  • Remove soiled bedding from cages and prepare them for washing.
  • Understand and follow appropriate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), safety procedures, and quality assurance guidelines.
  • Assist in receiving and storing of materials and supplies.
  • Ability to work flexible hours when needed to meet the operational needs of the facility.
  • Carry out assigned duties in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as standard operating procedures and specific protocol requirements.
  • Support ABSL-3 and ABSL-4 laboratory operations.
  • Perform other responsibilities as required.

Requirements


Required Experience and Skills

  • One year of experience working with laboratory animals or related work. 
  • Previous work experience or training in cage washing preferred.
  • Previous experience working with and handling laboratory animal species, most applicable to rodents and non-human primates, preferred.
  • Experience in ABSL–3 or ABSL-4 laboratories preferred.
  • Be able to don and doff the required Personal Protective Equipment. 
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and standard procedures
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Ability to identify and address issues and deficiencies and implement effective solutions according to guidelines.
  • Follow safety procedures and ensure standard policies and practices are followed.
  • Ability to obtain government clearance.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clear and satisfactory driving record.
  • Must be able to wear a respirator.
  • Will be required to work with, take specific precautions against, and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

Education and Training

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.)
  • Desire to become AALAS certified at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 55 pounds (25 kilograms) frequently. 
  • Strength and agility to capture, restrain, and carry medium-sized mammals without causing harm to the animal or self.
  • Must have no known allergies to animals, feed, or chemicals.
  • Walking, reaching, bending, and stooping.
  • May be exposed to Hazardous materials and will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect against exposure to pathogens and chemicals.
  • Ability to obtain necessary immunizations against vaccine-preventable diseases relevant to laboratory placement, including Hepatitis B, among others.
  • Ability to obtain respiratory clearance and fit testing may be required.
  • Must be able to work with hazardous chemicals and potentially infectious biological agents.
