Chesterfield County, Virginia, a nationally-recognized, award-winning local government, is seeking to hire a full-time Deputy County Attorney with strong academic background, significant recent state and federal litigation experience, and excellent research and writing skills. Candidate must also have recent experience practicing in the area of land use law in a large jurisdiction including representation of the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals. Candidates must be licensed members of the Virginia State Bar in good standing; must demonstrate considerable knowledge of state and federal civil law principals and practices, as well as the procedures governing proceedings before state and federal courts (trial and appellate), boards, commissions and administrative agencies; and must have considerable recent experience practicing civil law and litigating complex cases. Recent experience in trial and appellate litigation and a minimum of 10 years of legal experience in local government law is essential. Candidates must demonstrate a keen and recent understanding of the political, legal, and administrative environment in which a large local government operates and the ability to advocate legal solutions with moral authority. Candidates will be judged, in significant part, by the quality of their recent legal writing, including trial and appellate brief writing. Candidates must provide recent writing samples to the County Attorney's Office at the time of applying. Candidates will also be judged, in part, by references who are familiar with their character and professional achievements. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.

Position Duties

Provide legal counsel to county officials and employees; be responsible for a variety of complex legal matters including land use matters; and represent the County and its officials and employees in litigation, both as part of litigation teams, as lead counsel on litigation teams and individually. Provide supervisory guidance to other office members. Perform other work as required.
