Location: Ipswich, Suffolk
Salary: £30,924 per annum
Hours: Full time, 35 hours per week
Contract: 24 month Fixed Term Contract

About the role
The Suffolk County LG Branch of UNISON is seeking a dedicated and motivated BSOF Local Organiser to join its team on a 24-month fixed term contract.
This is an exciting opportunity to make a difference by recruiting, retaining and organising UNISON members working in the Education sector across Suffolk – including universities, colleges, and schools. The role focuses on growing and strengthening our membership base and building activism in workplaces through effective engagement and campaigning.
This is a branch-employed role, not a UNISON NEC employed post.
About UNISON
UNISON is the UK’s largest trade union with over 1.3 million members, including 80,000+ in the Eastern Region. We represent people working in public services, private contractors delivering public services, and essential utilities.
This vacancy is a branch post and is not employed by UNISON nationally.
About you
We are looking for a skilled organiser and communicator who can help us strengthen our presence and support structures across Suffolk’s education settings. You will bring experience in one-to-one communications, recruitment, organising and campaigning – ideally within a trade union or community organisation.
You’ll be a team player with strong time management skills and the ability to work to tight deadlines. A good understanding of trade union values and the ability to maintain accurate and confidential records is essential.
To succeed in this role, you will need:
knowledge of trade unionism and organising principles
strong interpersonal and administrative skills
the ability to manage your own workload and priorities
confidence to communicate with members, activists and employers
IT proficiency for maintaining membership records and communications.
A good understanding of education settings and challenges facing workers in schools, colleges and universities would be advantageous.
Please note: Due to the focus on school-based organising, annual leave during term time will be restricted.
Location and travel
The role is based at Endeavour House, Ipswich IP1 2BX. You must be able to travel across Suffolk and occasionally beyond the region for meetings and training. Living within reasonable commuting distance of the patch is required.
