As a Lead Engineer your main focus will be to provide technical support and steer to senior management, peers and other operational units for your area of your specialism. You will lead the development and implementation of equipment specifications and engineer systems for transmission & distribution overhead lines (including plant/cables) and equipment to ensure legal &licence compliance.  

What you’ll be doing

  • Perform all duties with a strong emphasis on health, safety, quality and environmental matters.

  • Support, develop and implement policies and strategies, in accordance with best practice to ensure effective management of the asset base consistent with legal & licence requirements.

  • Lead the development of engineering strategies, including equipment specifications, for overhead lines (including cable/plant) assessment and approvals and contract engineering with the full engagement and consultation of relevant stakeholders.

  • Maintain an awareness of advances in technology, equipment and best practice and drive implementation where appropriate within SP Energy Networks.

  • Provide technical advice on external and internal performance reporting in area of specialism.

  • Drive gains in efficiency and profitability through the application of appropriate new technology, equipment, materials and processes.

  • Author, prepare and deliver presentations and responses to requests for information from internal and external bodies.

  • Participate and Lead, as required, in Iberdrola global working groups including preparing Iberdrola Network Specifications and best practice forums.

  • Actively engage with Transmission and Distribution OH lines (including cable/plant) & equipment suppliers through engineering specification development, tendering processes and the approval of system assets.

  • Lead communication with wider business stakeholders on the introduction of new overhead lines, (including cable/plant) and processes  

  • Represent SP Energy Networks interests at external national and industry bodies such as the Energy Networks Association (ENA), National Grid, British Standards Institution (BSi), CIGRE and the Institution of Engineering Technology (IET).

What you’ll bring

  • Knowledge of Electrical Industry policies, procedures and working practices for Transmission and distribution overhead lines.

  • Knowledge of health, safety and environmental legislation.

  • Expert technical knowledge in relation to Transmission and Distribution overhead lines.

  • Excellent written, verbal and numerical skills, capable of effectively analysing supplier technical reports and data sheets.

  • Computer literacy – e.g., Microsoft Office suite, SAP.

  • Strong understanding of the energy industry, investment delivery challenges with an understanding of manufacturers and distributors in the Global Marketplace.

To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate as minimum:

  • Hold an HNC or Degree in an engineering discipline supported by experience in an operational, technical, or commercial engineering role.

  • Strong communication skills given the requirement to interface with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including customers.

  • Willingness to travel throughout the SPEN licence areas or to other locations, including to supplier manufacturing plants to steer approvals / attend type factory acceptance tests.

  • Full UK driving licence.
