SUMMARY:

Supports English Learners (ELs) by providing targeted assistance during designated English Language Development (ELD) time. The paraprofessional will work under the supervision of certified teachers to facilitate small-group and one-on-one language acquisition activities aligned with students' English proficiency levels and instructional goals. Implements and enforces School Board policies, administrative rules and regulations. Directs students and monitors their progress.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Provides instructional support to English Learners during targeted ELD sessions through small group or one-on-one interactions.
  • Implements language development lessons and activities designed by the ELD teacher, focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
  • Prepares and organizes instructional materials for targeted ELD lessons.
  • Collaborates with ELD teachers, classroom teachers, and other instructional staff to align support with students’ language needs.
  • Models English usage and supports students’ English language development.
  • Monitors and documents student progress in language acquisition activities and provides feedback to the ELD teacher.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student information in accordance with district and legal requirements.
  • Completes other activities and duties as required.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; AND Associate degree, 60 units of post-secondary coursework or passing score on a paraprofessional assessment; AND two years of experience working with students; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Meets state and federal paraprofessional requirements.

 

Required Knowledge of:

  • Stages of childhood development.
  • Principles, practices, and methods of teaching.
  • District, School Board, and Department policies and procedures.
  • Methods of classroom management.
  • Supervising and instructing students.

 

Required Skills in:

  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with coworkers and other individuals in contact during the course of work; communicating clearly and concisely; bilingual preferred.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing standard software such as Microsoft Office and some specialized

 

software; functioning standard office equipment.

  • Planning and implementing lesson plans and activities.
  • Practicing methods involved in providing quality customer service.

 

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in a standard classroom environment.
  • Willingness to walk between work in various classroom settings and pull-out instructional areas.
  • Required to assist students of various ages.
  • May require light lifting of instructional materials.
