Jackson County Community Justice is seeking dynamic individuals to join our team. Our department encompasses Adult Services, Juvenile Probation, Detention and Residential Services, and the Jackson County Transition Center. Through these services, we work to address criminal behavior and promote positive behavior change, ensuring a safer community for all.
We are currently hiring for an Accounting Specialist I position with Adult Services.

Salary Range: $22.17 - $29.64 Hourly

Position Duties
- Schedule will be 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
- Applicants that have a work history in accounting or finance are preferred.

Minimum Qualifications
I. Position Summary
Performs a variety of clerical accounting, billing and/or financial record keeping duties. Performs more general accounting, bookkeeping and/or billing functions using an established structure or pattern with less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods than incumbents in higher level positions.
II. Examples of Essential Position Duties (The following duties represent some of the principal job duties; however, they are not all-inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned.)
- Performs various accounting clerical tasks; compiles data; prepares, proofs, and processes payroll, quarterly statements, billings, journals, permits, reports, forms, warrants, claims, authorizations/distributions, spreadsheets and/or related materials.
- Prepares and audits forms for accuracy and completeness.
- Receives monies and prepare deposits; posts, checks, balances and adjusts accounts; distribute costs and materials to appropriate accounts; process refunds for overpayments; reconcile bank statements and assist with budget preparation.
- Enters and retrieves data from computer files and review computer printouts for accuracy; organizes and maintains computerized database.
- Answers telephones to answer inquiries and/or refer to appropriate personnel; assists public, employees, other departments and outside agencies in person and by telephone.
- Allocates revenue to general ledger accounts in compliance with county, state or federal regulations.
- Prepares claim forms for reimbursement; may interview clients to gather account information and/or verify eligibility.
- Prepares and types correspondence; processes refunds and other corrections according to established procedures.
- Provides back up to other staff; performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Adheres to regulatory requirements, collective bargaining agreements, County and departmental policies and procedures, required trainings, as well as safe work practices.
- Develops and maintains effective internal and external working relationships at all levels.
- Has regular and reliable attendance. Overtime may be required.
III. Minimum Requirements (Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following requirements, physical demands and/or working conditions)
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent AND one year of accounting experience (accounting, bookkeeping or financial courses and customer service experience preferred); OR
- Any combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the job.
License, Certificate or Other
Requires possession of a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Requires a knowledge of accounting and financial principles and practices and terminologies; payroll and withholding tax laws and regulations; auditing techniques; laws and regulations related to billing; cash handling and control procedures; requirements, laws, ordinances, terms, procedures, and practices as applied in the assigned program/department; computerized financial and/or billing systems. Ability to prepare data processing reports; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; compile, organize, prepare and maintain an assortment of records, reports and information in an effective manner and according to departmental and/or governmental regulations; post and make arithmetical computations rapidly and accurately.
Physical Demands (Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following physical demands)
Ability to work in a standard office environment; requires the ability to exert a small amount of physical effort in sedentary to light work involving moving from one area of the office to another; may require some moderate lifting, bending, reaching, kneeling and some climbing requires sufficient hand/eye coordination to perform semi-skilled repetitive movements, such as typing, filing, data entry, and/or use of calculators, ten-key adding machine, or other office equipment or supplies. Requires driving.

Work is generally performed in an office environment and may include exposure to disruptive people.
