The Data Management Division (DMD) at The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is seeking an experienced Senior Cloud Engineer with expertise in cloud-native application development and cloud infrastructure management, to help design and develop AWS cloud-based science platforms and tools. This position can support hybrid work. Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to our local market. (MD, DE, VA, PA, DC & WV).
This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residence to meet ITAR requirements.
The annual salary range for this senior level role is $130,000 - $150,000. The posted salary range represents a general guideline; however, STScI considers several factors when determining base salary offers, such as internal pay equity, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's experience, education, and skill, and current market conditions. The starting position and salary are commensurate with education, skills and experience.
The Role
You will work in a cloud computing environment to help maintain STScI’s position as a world leader in developing high-quality software and science-ready data products for astronomy, supporting astronomers worldwide. In collaboration with software developers, cloud engineers, and astronomers, you will deliver critical science products and data processing tools that run on AWS-based science platforms optimized for the needs of the broader scientific community.
This role is ideal for someone with deep expertise in the AWS cloud platform and a strong focus on automating the configuration, deployment, and provisioning of cloud resources using AWS tools and services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop infrastructure configuration as IaC using technologies such as Terraform, CloudFormation, etc.
- Implement CI/CD/CT pipelines to build, deploy, and test native cloud application code
- Develop scalable, reliable, and secure AWS native cloud applications
- Develop systems for the pipeline processing of astronomical data
Experience, Skills & Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Software Engineering or a relevant field with a minimum of 8+ years’ working experience in an AWS Cloud environment required for a senior level position.
You have experience designing and securing applications by incorporating cloud architecture best practices, infrastructure as code, and automation to deploy high-quality services in an AWS cloud environment.
Proficient in building automation tools and CI/CD/CT pipelines using platforms like Ansible, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, and CodePipeline
- Expertise in containerization and Kubernetes
- In-depth knowledge of AWS services (EC2, Lambda, DynamoDB, RDS, S3, API Gateway)
- Strong experience with AWS and proficiency in Python, Java, BASH, and IaC tools like Terraform and CloudFormation
- Expertise in cloud-native application development, and cloud infrastructure management.
