JOB SUMMARY:

 

The Building Inspector is responsible for the inspection of constructions projects for residential, commercial and industrial developments for compliance with all applicable codes and ordinances.  

 

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Performs site inspections of construction work, building and related system for conformance with a approved plans and applicable codes; inspects foundations, framing, electrical systems, heating and air conditions systems, plumbing systems, and final grading of all new construction and remodeling projects; coordinates inspection activities with owner, contractors, other inspectors and other individuals. 

 

Reviews construction and site plans and assures compliance with all applicable codes and ordinances for development of all types and interprets standards.

 

Notifies contractors, subcontractors, engineers, architects, or homeowners of code violations and discusses possible options to correct violations.

 

Responds to telephone inquiries from citizens, builders, contractors, and public utilities related to code interpretation and enforcement; provides information and instructions to the general public.

 

Maintains files of inspections, re-inspections, inspector notes, and required reports; compiles status reports on specific assignments, as requested; creates related databases.

 

Completes various administrative reports.

 

Performs other related duties as required that supports the objective of the Building Inspections department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

 

High school diploma or equivalent with an associate’s degree in a related field preferred, and (3) three years of related construction or trades experience to include (1) one year of inspector experience. 

 

Or, any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to competently perform the essential duties of the position

 

Current Georgia Driver’s License and a satisfactory MVR

 

Licenses and Certifications:

 

Residential Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, and Electrical inspector certifications from a recognized state, national or international association or obtain at minimum a Residential Building inspector equivalent certification within one year. Certifications must be maintained in good standing for the duration of employment at all levels of Building Inspector.

 

Level IB Advanced GSWCC, NPDES, or equivalent certification within one year 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Knowledge of relevant laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and department policies and procedures.

 

Knowledge of the geography of Hall County.

 

Knowledge of construction standards, ADA requirements, fire safety regulation, knowledge of .

 

Ability to make required mathematical calculations, read blueprints, maps, and technical drawings.

 

Ability to compile, organize, and maintain data, records, and reports and use judgment in routine and non-routine situations.

 

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

 

ADA Minimum Requirements

 

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert light to medium physical effort in sedentary to medium level activity which may require some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of medium weight (up to 20 pounds) and occasionally of heavy weight (up to 50 pounds).   Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation as well as work in the field at construction sites.  Duties require the ability to use a personal computer, to operate a motor vehicle, and to use tools and equipment used in inspection and measurement of construction elements.

 

Sensory Requirements: Tasks require the ability to communicate orally in person and by telephone.  Tasks require the ability to visually inspect items for proper length, width, and shape using various tools and equipment.

 

Environmental Factors: Essential functions are performed with frequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions including weather, dust, debris, chemicals, and machinery involved in construction.
