Assistant Maintenance Section Supervisor II

Supervises a group of maintenance and/or clerical employees responsible for providing a safe driving thoroughfare within a designated geographical area. Reports to a Maintenance Section Supervisor at a maintenance section with a rank sum ratio in accordance with the published rank sum. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with the public. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

  • Assigns and oversees the work of section and contracted crews; ensures all projects follow established safety guidelines.
  • Assists in budget preparation for the section.
  • Assists with planning, coordinating, and implementing emergency response to inclement weather, accidents, and hazardous spills affecting area roadways.
  • Handles public complaints.
  • Inspects road conditions, work-in-progress, and work completed by the crews and contractors.
  • Maintains records on materials, supplies, and personnel.
  • Oversees scheduling of equipment, material, and personnel necessary for section projects.
  • Responsible for operations of section in absence of supervisor.
  • Trains employees on the use of equipment and procedures.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Assistant Maintenance Section Supervisor II

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience

  • 6 years in roadway maintenance or construction-related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year-by-year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have 2 years of supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL within 120 calendar days from the date of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL)

        • Incident management procedures
        • Inventory/stock control procedures
        • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering, construction, and maintenance work
        • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance

Proficient skill in

        • Scheduling work assignments
        • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external

Ability to

        • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes.

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.

  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools.

  • Pushing- using upper extremities to press against object with force to move in a direction.
  • Pulling- using upper extremities to exert force moving objects in a sustained motion.
  • Lifting- raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position.
  • Fingering- picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand.
  • Grasping- applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm.
  • Talking- expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
  • Hearing- perceive sound at normal speaking levels;receive information by oral communication.
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Close Visual Acuity- work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading.
  • Close Visual Acuity- work includes visual inspection of small defects/parts.
  • Close Visual Acuity- using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts.
  • Visual Acuity- operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills.
  • Visual Acuity- operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.
