Position Description
Position Title: Buildings and Grounds Coordinator
Department: Buildings & Grounds
Reports To: Director of Operations
Position Summary
The Buildings and Grounds Coordinator serves as the district’s lead maintenance technician with direct, hands-on maintenance responsibilities. This position works collaboratively with the Director to ensure that all district buildings and physical assets are maintained in a state of operational excellence. The goal is to provide clean, safe, and comfortable environments that support high-quality teaching and learning.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent required; additional technical certifications or trade school training preferred.
Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in maintenance or facilities operations, including leadership or supervisory responsibilities.
Valid Illinois Driver’s License.
Demonstrated knowledge and hands-on experience in multiple disciplines: boilers, HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, carpentry, painting, and custodial services.
Ability to interpret architectural, electrical, and mechanical drawings or schematics.
Computer literacy with experience in Building Automation Systems (BAS) and Work Order software.
Strong organizational and communication skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with staff and community.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and emergency on-call as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Plan, assign, and supervise maintenance and custodial work assignments.
Operate and monitor HVAC systems through the Building Automation System.
Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair building systems and equipment.
Safely operate hand and power tools and related equipment.
Assist in selection, training, evaluation, and scheduling of maintenance/custodial staff.
Assist in planning and implementing capital improvement and energy management initiatives.
Coordinate work performed by outside contractors and vendors.
Maintain inventory of parts and supplies; order as needed.
Respond to after-hours emergencies and alarms.
Travel between district buildings using a district vehicle.
Assist with facility setup for school and community events.
Maintain a positive, flexible attitude in a fast-paced environment.
Utilize technology for work orders, email, scheduling, and reporting.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Buildings and Grounds.
Physical Demands
Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands for fine motor tasks, reach with arms, talk, and hear.
Frequently required to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift or move up to 50 lbs; occasionally up to 90 lbs.
Ability to work in confined spaces (e.g., steam tunnels, attics) and at heights using ladders or lifts.
Visual requirements include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
Work performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
Exposure to moving mechanical parts, chemicals (e.g., cleaning agents, boiler treatment), and moderate noise levels.
Must meet deadlines under time constraints and respond to emergencies.
Employment Requirements
Successful completion of a fingerprint-based criminal background check and employment eligibility verification (per Illinois School Code).
Compliance with all district policies, including those related to drug/alcohol-free workplace, ethics, and safety.
Position is considered a mandated reporter under the Illinois Abused and Neglected Child Reporting Act.
