As an Instrument and Electrical Engineer, you will lead and support projects while providing technical expertise to maintenance and operations teams. Your role will involve participating in root cause failure analyses, process hazard assessments, and audits. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including production, maintenance, and operations—will be crucial as you work to deliver solutions, improvements, and actionable paths to address challenging problems. On a daily basis, you will engage with department members and site personnel to maintain and enhance electrical, instrumentation, and control systems. 

 

 

As a Instrument and Electrical Engineer, you create chemistry by...

 

  • Ensuring compliance with BASF Technical Standards, industry standards, and applicable regulatory and design codes for specific jobs and projects.
  • Collaborating with experienced colleagues to develop both technical skills and organizational capabilities.
  • Specifying instrumentation, controls, and electrical equipment; working with vendors to identify solutions, assist in troubleshooting, and provide technical support for equipment procurement.
  • Addressing action items and engineering requests from operations or maintenance, ensuring timely and budget-compliant completion.
  • Providing technical support to improve the reliability and maintainability of I&E equipment, with occasional on-call responsibilities.
  • Interfacing with E/I Team members, maintenance personnel, project staff, and production/operations to support safe, reliable production at the site.
  • Performing detailed engineering design for new and modified electrical, instrumentation, and controls systems.
  • Ensuring proper documentation of instrument and electrical equipment records and drawings to meet regulatory and BASF requirements.
  • Serving as a technical expert for instrumentation, safety instrumented systems, power distribution, and relevant codes and standards.
  • Supporting implementation of capital projects as the E/I discipline lead and managing outside engineering and construction resources.
  • Acting as a resource for one or more plants regarding reliability, preventive maintenance, and critical instrument needs.
  • Updating and maintaining short circuit, power coordination, and arc flash studies as needed.

If you have...

 

Required:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, preferred, combined with at least 7 years of progressively responsible industrial experience in manufacturing plant instrumentation and electrical systems -OR- an Associate’s degree in a relevant technical area, combined with at least 10 years of progressively responsible industrial experience in manufacturing plant instrumentation and electrical systems.
  • Strong knowledge of instrument and electrical design.
  • Familiarity with MCCs, VFDs (including braking systems), and switchgear up to at least 480V.
  • Working knowledge of DCS platforms (preferably DeltaV) and PLC/Logic Solver systems (preferably Allen-Bradley).
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

 

Desired:

  • Experience specifying, installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting temperature, flow, pressure, level, and analytical instruments and valves.
  • Experience with specifying, installing, and testing Safety Instrumented Systems, as well as familiarity with applicable codes.
  • Experience with various instrumentation protocols (Fieldbus, Profibus, HART, DeviceNet, Modbus, Wireless).
  • Experience with short circuit, power coordination, and arc flash studies is a plus.
  • Knowledge of codes applicable to a chemical plant, including but not limited to NFPA 70 and 70E.
