About the Department
Position Duties
Under supervision of the Director and Chief Building Official and Commissioner of Construction Permitting, examines residential construction documents of One-, Two-, and Three-Family Dwellings prior to construction for the purposes of ensuring compliance with laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations relating to construction, alteration, movement, enlargement, replacement, repair, equipment, use and occupancy, location, maintenance, removal, and demolition. Performs related duties as required that pertain to enforcement of the Cleveland Housing Code, the Cleveland Zoning Code, and the Ohio Residential Code.
Minimum Qualifications
(Note: this classification utilizes the working titles of Residential Plan Examiner, Interim Residential Plan Examiner, and Residential Plan Examiner Trainee, depending on the certification held.)
High School Diploma, GED or higher is required. Valid State of Ohio Driver's License is required. Must meet one of the following requirements: An interim or full, State of Ohio Board of Building Standards certification as a Residential Plan Examiner; a full State of Ohio Board of Building Standards certification as a Master Plan Examiner (MPE); a full State of Ohio Board of Building Standards certification as a Building Inspector (BI); a full State of Ohio Board of Building Standards certification as an Building Official (BO); At least five years of experience as a residential contractor or non-residential contractor or superintendent with responsibility for obtaining approvals and inspections of structures regulated by the rules of the board or at least five years of experience in residential design with responsibility for submitting designs for structures regulated by the rules of the board. A State of Ohio Board of Building Standards certification as a Residential Plan Examiner must be obtained within 60 days for MPE, BI and BO applicants. Must have and maintain certifications throughout employment.
