Job Summary
Obsidian Solutions Group is seeking a Senior-Level Technical Writer to provide comprehensive technical writing support for Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) Surface-to-Air Weapon Systems (SAWS). This position requires an experienced professional who will develop, review, and update critical naval tactical publications, doctrine, and procedures. The successful candidate will work closely with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), Warfare Tactics Instructors (WTIs), and other stakeholders to ensure tactical and technical information is accurate, clear, and compliant with Navy standards. This role combines technical writing expertise with advanced graphics capabilities and deep knowledge of ballistic missile defense (BMD) and IAMD operations.
Requirements
Specific Responsibilities
- Provide updates to include review, update, and development of Tactical Memorandum (TACMEMO), Tactical Bulletins (TACBUL), Tactical Notes (TACNOTE), Tactical Advisory Messages (TAMs) and Fleet Advisory Messages (FAMs)
- Review, update, and provide input on Joint Publications (JPs), Navy Warfare Publications (NWPs), Navy Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (NTTP), Concept of Operations (CONOPS), Concept of Employment (CONEMP), and Navy Tactical Reference Publications (NTRP)
- Monitor publication project progress through all phases including Front End Analysis (FEA), content creation, editing, approval, and distribution using publication project databases
- Research and validate information from ships' battle bills, naval messages, combat system/equipment configuration manuals, approved tactics, and technical specialist data to ensure compliance with existing directives
- Write and edit publications for intended audiences, rewriting text to ensure tactical/technical information is clear, correct, and succinct with proper classification markings
- Develop high-quality graphics, figures, tables, and visual presentations to enhance publication effectiveness and clarity
- Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), Warfare Tactics Instructors (WTIs), and stakeholders to develop and clarify content using applicable warfare area knowledge and experience
- Follow writing and editorial policies, practices, and procedures established by the N5 Directorate and NRTP 1-01
- Provide recommendations on the most effective methods of presentation and content organization
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree with minimum 5 years of technical writing experience in defense/military environments
- Current Security Clearance of SECRET and TS/SCI eligible
- At least 5 years of recent experience developing high-quality graphics for presentations
- At least 5 years of recent proficiency with Adobe software including Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat, and Premiere or equivalent computer programs
- At least 5 years of recent experience either teaching or developing BMD or IAMD related doctrine or tactics, techniques and procedures (TTP)
- Strong understanding of Navy publication standards, classification guidelines, and editorial procedures
- Experience with naval tactical operations, combat systems, and equipment configuration
- Demonstrated ability to work with Subject Matter Experts and translate complex technical concepts into clear, accessible documentation
- Proficiency in publication project management and database systems
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Ability to work in an office environment with standard computer workstations
- May require extended periods of sitting and computer use for writing and graphics development
- Must be able to handle classified materials in accordance with security protocols
- Work environment may include secure facilities requiring adherence to strict security procedures
Travel
- Minimal travel required, primarily for stakeholder meetings or training events as needed
- Occasional travel to naval facilities or training centers may be required
