About the Department
The Crew Boss is responsible for coordinating, supervising, and transporting sentenced inmates participating in the Inmate Work Program. These crews perform public service and maintenance projects throughout Boulder County in support of government agencies and non-profit organizations. The Crew Boss ensures safety, security, professionalism, and productivity while maintaining accountabilities for all assigned inmates, equipment, and tools.

Position Duties
- Coordinate and schedule daily work assignments for inmate labor crews.
- Transport inmates safely to and from designated work sites throughout Boulder County.
- Supervise inmate workers on-site, ensuring appropriate conduct, compliance with program rules, and safe use of equipment.
- Conduct inmate headcounts and maintain constant accountability.
- Inspect inmates and work areas for contraband, unsafe conditions, or non-compliance.
- Train and guide inmates in basic job skills, safety protocols, and work expectations.
- Maintain clear and accurate daily logs, incident reports, job site statistics, and equipment checklists.
- Communicate professionally with partnering agencies and community stakeholders.
- Enforce all policies of the Boulder County Jail Work Program and serve as a positive role model.
- Perform personal searches of inmates prior to transport or entry into the jail.
- Operate county transport vehicles, two-way radios, and mobile communication devices.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Licenses/Certifications:
- Valid Colorado Driver’s License at time of appointment and throughout employment.
- Must be able to obtain First Aid and CPR certifications within six months of hire.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
- Prior experience working with at-risk or justice-involved populations.
- Familiarity with community-based work projects or volunteer coordination.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Strong knowledge of hand tools, power tools, safety procedures, and equipment operation.
- Ability to lead and mentor individuals with varied work experience and backgrounds.
- Good written and verbal communication skills; ability to document incidents thoroughly and clearly.
- High degree of professionalism, maturity, and integrity.
- Ability to remain calm, fair, and consistent under pressure.
- Capable of working independently with limited supervision in both indoor and outdoor environments.
- Familiarity with restorative justice or community engagement philosophies is a plus.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must successfully pass a comprehensive background check.
- No felony convictions.
- No DUI/DWAI or driver’s license revocations within the last 24 months.
- No use of illegal drugs within the past 3 years.
- Must reside in Colorado at the time of appointment.
- Be able to operate county vehicles
Other Qualifications
PHYSICAL & FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to stand, walk, climb, bend, and lift equipment and supplies (up to 150 lbs).
- Must have the ability to operate vehicles, climb stairs and ladders, and work outdoors in varied weather conditions.
- Must possess adequate vision, hearing, speech, and motor function to safely supervise and interact with inmates and staff.
- Must be able to respond quickly and appropriately in emergencies.
